From Amazon.co.uk

Mumblecore auteurs the Duplass brothers (Baghead, The Puffy Chair) dip their toes in the precarious waters of Hollywood by casting well-known actors in Cyrus. But their devotion to clumsy, uncomfortable people remains: John (John C. Reilly, Step Brothers) has barely left his apartment in the seven years since Jamie (Catherine Keener, Lovely & Amazing) divorced him, so Jamie demands he come to a party--where, miraculously, he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler), who seems like the woman of his dreams. Unfortunately, Molly comes with some baggage: her 22-year-old son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill, Superbad). To say Molly and Cyrus are close is an understatement, and John finds himself in a battle of wills with Molly as the prize. The Duplass brothers seek a kind of cinematic simplicity--to call it purity would be too highbrow for these aggressively pedestrian filmmakers--and when it works, it brings the viewer in intimate contact with life in its ordinary, essential glory. When it doesn't work, it's just dull. Despite its flatfooted plot, Cyrus works pretty well. The higher calibre of the cast helps--Reilly, Tomei, Hill, and Keener are all excellent, and much of the movie is genuinely funny. Don't expect elegance, but sometimes, something plain can please. --Bret Fetzer

Although billed as a comedy and wrapped in a comedic sheen of one liners, Cyrus is weighted heavily towards the dramatic. There's nothing intrinsically funny about the situation, and it's to the directors credit that they didn't try to force too much comedy out of the film as it would probably have failed miserably. Much of the dialogue is improvised which probably helped to keep the film true to it's dark centre. All three of the leads are excellent. Very enjoyable, not too long and glad I watched it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cyrus - Film Review 7 Dec 2010
Format:DVD
Film Review: Cyrus
After watching the trailer for this film, I expected a light hearted, easy to watch comedy. Starring, Jonah Hill (Knocked up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) as`Cyrus`, a twenty something who lives at home with his mother becomes incredibly jealous of his mother`s new boyfriend, played by John.C Reily (Step brothers), the comedy genre was definately the selling point for me.
Both actors delivered impeccable comedic timing, with just enough awkwardness, sarcasm and quirky lines to probe laughter throughout the film. However, my expectation of an up beat, silly story that the two are usually cast in was soon challenged. Deep themes including, age, family, divorce and personal identity added a dark edge to the film. This film depicted a strong mother and son relationship for all to empathise with. The underlying theme of letting go and achieving balance gave this romantic comedy a deeper edge.
Overall, the happy ending, laugh a minute comedy and talented cast made this an enjoyable watch, with added meaning and sentiment.
Rebecca Davis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie 17 Feb 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this movie. John C Reilly has to be one of the best actors around today. I liked the story, lots of humour. I will never be able to hear Human League's " Don't you want me?" again without smiling to myself!
