Although billed as a comedy and wrapped in a comedic sheen of one liners, Cyrus is weighted heavily towards the dramatic. There's nothing intrinsically funny about the situation, and it's to the directors credit that they didn't try to force too much comedy out of the film as it would probably have failed miserably. Much of the dialogue is improvised which probably helped to keep the film true to it's dark centre. All three of the leads are excellent. Very enjoyable, not too long and glad I watched it.

without going into too much detail about the movie, as I believe it is best left to the viewers own discretion, I was pleasently surprised by this film.
On the cover it is described by EMPIRE as "supremely funny..." Yes there are some smile to yourself moments but certainly not in terms of holding your sides funny.
John c reilly as expected, gives the protagonist of the movie human depth and like ability.
Forget the fact that Jonah hill is best known for roles where he plays a foulmouth baffoon, as his character in this movie is completely straight and alittle tragic without a wisecrack in sight, and is more brilliant for it.
Marisa Tomei is brilliant as the put upon mother trying to please everyone and adjusting to her new role as someone's steady girlfriend.
Overall this is a sweet, realistic movie about the complex dynamic of a dysfunctional family unit and learning to change.

Film Review: Cyrus
After watching the trailer for this film, I expected a light hearted, easy to watch comedy. Starring, Jonah Hill (Knocked up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) as`Cyrus`, a twenty something who lives at home with his mother becomes incredibly jealous of his mother`s new boyfriend, played by John.C Reily (Step brothers), the comedy genre was definately the selling point for me.
Both actors delivered impeccable comedic timing, with just enough awkwardness, sarcasm and quirky lines to probe laughter throughout the film. However, my expectation of an up beat, silly story that the two are usually cast in was soon challenged. Deep themes including, age, family, divorce and personal identity added a dark edge to the film. This film depicted a strong mother and son relationship for all to empathise with. The underlying theme of letting go and achieving balance gave this romantic comedy a deeper edge.
Overall, the happy ending, laugh a minute comedy and talented cast made this an enjoyable watch, with added meaning and sentiment.
Rebecca Davis.

This oddball comedy has had mixed reviews but i must say its one of the best ive seen for a while.always been a fan of john c reilly and jonah hill, havent seen them in any thing bad yet.basicly the films about cyrus played by hill putting john off his mam in weird and creepy ways, which of cause john played by reilly is having none of.its a slowburner which might put some people off but i found the film very funny, down to earth and rewarding experience.top stuff

I love this movie. John C Reilly has to be one of the best actors around today. I liked the story, lots of humour. I will never be able to hear Human League's " Don't you want me?" again without smiling to myself!

This movie is an excruciatingly funny commentary on the human condition. In particular, it deals with that variant of love so well documented in ancient Greece in the story of Oedipus. That is, the intense passion often experienced in the mother son relationship. John C. Reilly is the hapless anti-hero who becomes the hero. His quest to break through the unbreakable bond in order to reach the woman he loves, is a joy to witness. Superb performances by Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei are complimented by excellent writing from Jay and Mark Duplass.

This film was marketed terribly. i bet the writers and director were angry because they've made a really intelligent, well acted film with great dialogue and it has been markted as a silly comedy. i really like silly comedies, they have a place but for all the people who don't want to be challenged by a film and to actually engage their brain, they will have been disappointed by this.

It is more of a gentle comedy with a family drama edge to it and also some very realistic glances into the psyche of people involved in this situation. the jealous of mum's new boyfriend kid, the mum who doesn't want to upset her son and the awkward new guy who's afraid of new girlfriend's kid. they were all well observed characters.

i'm really into the "mumblecore" movement, of which the guys who made this film are a part. if you didn't like this you will HATE their other films! this is an attempt to make a mumblecore style film but with more of a linear plot and generally more going on. for me it is very successful in this. really enjoyed it.
