5.0 out of 5 stars Not Brilliant Quality Picture or Sound 19 Feb 2010
Alas this edition has deterioated and the sound and picture quality leave a lot to be desired, however this is still a great movie. I am a huge fan of the play Cyrano de Bergerac (Penguin Classics), which arguably brought the idea of panache to British audiences and this film is based on Brian Hooker's 1923 blank verse translation of this famous play.

Jose Ferrer in the lead role won an Oscar for best actor for this and it is easy to see why if you watch this. Most people seem to think that Cyrano de Bergerac is a fictional character, but he really did exist and was one of those people who were larger than life, but reports would seem to show that his nose wasn't quite as prominent as he has been portrayed ever since.

When Cyrano finds that a young and attractive man is in hopes of wooing Roxane, who Cyrano is in love with himself, he offers assistance. Helping the youth through poems and what to say he hides the secret of his own love. Full of incident, both action, comedy and melodrama this wil grip you from the beginning. Don't expect lavish sets, this was a low budget movie, that although critically acclaimed was a box office flop at the time, although now it is recognised as a classic.

If you can put up with the defects with sound and picture quality then you will enjoy this. There are other versions of this film, the only other I have seen is with Gerard Depardieu and is subtitled, but which is really enjoyable Cyrano De Bergerac [DVD].

5.0 out of 5 stars Cyrano De Bergerac an action classic 7 April 2005
This version of Cyrano De Bergerac is a gem for those people who enjoy a Shakepearean type drama but in an understandable style,a stage classic this picture has some of the best duelling sequences I have seen ,and tells the story of Cyrano De Bergerac 17th century swordsman soldier poet philosopher whose large nose robs him of the confidence to approach his true love the beautiful Roxanne (His cousin)his feeling are given a chance to emerge when he woos her on behalf of another handsome young suitor who has no gift with words, whom he aids by tutoring him in the use of his own verses, while he remains
This is a good movie perhaps not very well known but it contains within a great story ,funny ,exciting and extremely moving buy Cyrano De Bergerac its different but very very good

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 23 Dec 2013

This version (Elstree Hill Entertainment) is very low quality. Surely there are better editions available? I cannot believe Stanley Kramer would have employed such poor camera, lighting and sound. Having said that Jose Ferrer is very good in the title role.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware-poor quality version 11 July 2013
By Wellaar
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This must be the poorest version of any film I've ever seen. The picture is blurred and hops about one gets seasick watching it. As for the sound, it's even worse than the picture. The plastic DVD case was good though.
