Before I bought this book there were loads of other customer reviews (don't know why there are none today) with varied opinions - quite a few negative ones, so I ended up buying the Eyewitness Travel guide and the AA spiral guide instead. Whilst the Eyewitness book is lovely to look at having so many colour photos and th AA book is a handy size, I have to say that I ended up buying the Lonely Planet guide as well as it has far more detailed information about the island eg history, costs, restaurants, just everything really. It is written by someone who has tried and tested all that the island has to offer and its detailed reviews entice you to go and try for yourself. It really is a far more superior guide, though admittedly not so attractive to look at.

The shame about this book is the lack of pictures to put with all the described places. Everything else is very good and useful. Its tells of the history, culture and public holidays of Cyprus and contains lots of maps and tourist information. It also has a menu reader and contains a dictionary and phrases in both Greek (for the South) and Turkish (for the North).

Cyprus is a lovely Island. My family and I have spent the last three springs exploring it. We have concentrated mainly on the west of the Island, and have come to the conclusion that the best way to see the place is by renting a 4x4 and getting a decent map. The tour guides tend to be patchy at best and go out of date very quickly.

This guide book is better than most. It has plenty of historical information, which, lets face it, aint going to go out of date any time soon. So it can be a valuable asset if you are tracking down interesting sites. This is particularly useful as Cypriots tend to big up some of their attractions, whilst neglecting others. For instance, Aphrodite's Pool at the far west of the island, is little more than a puddle, yet there is one of the most beautiful gorges I have ever seen some 20 miles south of that, which is barely signposted!

However, the guidebook is fairly useless if you are looking for accommodation or restaurants, because it is now very out of date. Also, the book skimps on its coverage of the western half of the island, which is a real shame, as that is by far the nicer area. Eastern Cyprus is pretty much generic med tourism. If you want the real deal, go west!
