5.0 out of 5 stars CYPRUS AS I SAW IT IN 1879 8 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one for those interested in the condition of the island a year after the British had taken it over from Turkey, hamstrung by the terms of the transaction. Sir Baker had two gypsy caravans fitted out, provisioned and sent out there and hired a yoke of oxen to pull each of them once there. He took his wife- mentioned by name only 3-4 times, his 3 hunting dogs and hired a native guide and two servants out there. He appears to be surveying the island for its level of productiveness and potential productiveness for official purposes on a generous budget though does not write that it was a job. in the process we learn about the peculiar irrigation problems there, the denuding of the forestation affecting rainfall and soil erosion, the abject poverty and fleas and all the different types of rocks flowers animals birds landscapes towns and ways of scratching a living. For an efficient thoroughbred colonialist and scientific documentor, he is surprisingly compassionate about the condition of the very poorest children. His landscape descriptions are very good and in the villages notes how attrative or not are the women. It is a surprisingly good read and refreshingly so with the place rather than the writer's emotions at every turn taking central stage throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've been here... 18 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Then you're in for a treat! Whilst the Author refers some of the name places in the old sense, his varying adventures bring vivid memories of his time there, along with all the exasperations, beautiful or arid landscapes unfold in his journeyings. The very descriptive and impressive emotive feelings he expresses with (unusually) his Wife accompanying him and erstwhile companions add flavour to the characterisation of the whole scenario. Unusually, he admits to the state of the inhabitants of the island as being poorly dressd (typical of the working classes then), who would ever admit to dalliances with fleas found in old dwellings at that time, long before really good hotels were thought of? A bit of the 'Old Wild West' yarn, well told. I know - I've been there 71 years later!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting to compare this with the present day 31 Aug. 2012

I downloaded this to read on a recent (first) trip to Cyprus. It gives the author's views and experiences while traveling in Cyprus in 1879. It was a fascinating account not only of the difficult travelling conditions for the caravan imported specially for the trip, the appearance of the locals, customs, trade, weather, agriculture and much much more. The author is well travelled and foresees many of the changes which have now come to pass. He has a dry sense of humour which had me laughing aloud at times.

The book concludes with various figures and I have to confess I did not read them in detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Filled a lot of gaps in my knowledge of Cyprus 14 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am quite familiar with the island but had many questions around the culture of its people and their prejudices, I found this book both interesting and informative. The author wrote it over a hundred years ago which I think was to its benefit, it reflected what was then current issues and situations, it was not written by a historian looking back so the people and events were recorded as they happened, It explained a lot of things which had puzzled me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky historical read 1 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having lived in Cyprus for many years, I purchased this out of interest and found myself engrossed, reading about places that I knew, and recognising the people written about. Be interesting to return and trace his route one day.

There are many books on Cyprus for the era 1950 onwards.

This book shows us how Cyprus was during the Colonial period.

As I am interested in Cyprus history , I find that this is an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia 7 May 2013

What a fantastic trip back in time. Cyprus as it was - and how I wish it still was. Samuel White Baker paints a glorious 'warts and all' picture of Cyprus as it was before progress, modernisation, etc etc.
