Book Description

18 Sep 2012
Legendary and iconic singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper offers a poignant account of the journey that led her to become an international superstar. From her years growing up in Queens, New York, to the making of enduring hits like 'Time After Time', 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' and 'True Colors', to becoming an actress, a mother, an outspoken activist and maintaining a music career that has lasted more than thirty years. After leaving her childhood home at seventeen, Cyndi took on a series of jobs: racetrack hot walker, IHOP waitress and, as she puts it, 'gal Friday the thirteenth', as she pursued her passion for music. She worked her way playing small gigs and broke out in 1983 with 'She's So Unusual' which earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist and made her the first female artist in history to have four top five singles on a debut album. And while global fame wasn't always what she expected, she has remained focused on what matters most. Cyndi is a gutsy real-life heroine who has never been afraid to speak her mind and stick up for a cause - whether it's women's rights, gay rights, or fighting against HIV/AIDS. With her trademark warmth and humour, Cyndi fearlessly writes of a life she's lived only on her own terms.

Review

'She'll always be remembered for singing Girls Just Want To Have Fun... but Cyndi Lauper has revealed a dark, violent past that pushed her to the brink of suicide.... In her shockingly honest new autobiography she tells for the first time how she escaped a violent upbringing and a life begging on the street to make it as a chart star' - Sunday Mirror

'Cyndi Lauper has told how only the title of her biggest hit saved her from suicide. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer reveals in her new book how she escaped a violent upbringing and a life begging on the street' - Glasgow Sunday Mail

"It's pretty daunting, writing a lot of your life down. I was trying to be careful. I just wrote my experiences and tried to respect other people's privacy. I wanted to write a story about how I grew up in the music business and how I wanted success on my own terms" - Cyndi Lauper, 60 Seconds, Metro

'...giving the finger to all the people who at some point attempted to curb her free spirit, disapproving of her thrift-shop style, Crayola hair and unfettered singing and dancing... Pain notwithstanding, Lauper's boundless energy bounces off the page' - Helen Zaltzman, Observer

A gripping account of where it all went surprisingly right in the face of terrible bad luck and a tough upbringing' --Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow 1 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a complete Cyndi fan, always have been since I was a kid and was so excited to read her book. However,
I did not go into this with rose tinted glasses, I was a little worried it was going to be incomplete and
gloss over parts of her life. How wrong I was! Never have I read a better autobiography (and I have read bucket loads). The
honesty, humour and sheer talent of this woman just amazes me.
I would suggest anyone who likes music and enjoys reading a well written and eye opening life story, should really give this a try. Well done Cyndi!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly honest! 29 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover
The girl that just wanted to have fun had it and a hell of a lot more. This brave and honest memoir tells all about her life. From her earliest memories to the day she left home and her rise to fame to today. The book starts with her leaving home and recounts the hardships (believe me they were hardships) she went through until and after she achieved fame. While it has shocks and moment where you just think, "WHAT THE HELL" there are just as many laughs. The brutal truth is always present in this memoir and it is an addictive read. You won't want to put it down until you have read it all. As well as being incredibly honest and brave it is well written and really does give the reader enjoyment. Great read about an icon of the 80's.
