Product Description

Product Description

Cyclopean is a collaboration from Burnt Friedman, Jono Podmore and Can founding members Jaki Liebezeit, and Irmin Schmidt.

After 'The Lost Tapes', Can s legacy has never felt more apparent than now, and Cyclopean brings together two giants from this legendary band, Jaki Liebezeit and Irmin Schmidt alongside long time collaborators Jono Podmore (Kumo / Metamono) and musician and producer Burnt Friedman.

The title provides a metaphor for the music: Cyclopean forms are beautiful, massive and intriguing structures that interlock, intersect and connect seemingly contradictory components. Heavy, yet light, powerful, subtle, intriguing and playful. There's also a flavour of the ancient in this music - an artefact from a sophisticated pre-culture perhaps. Extraordinary instrumentation - rubber band guitar, theremin, prepared piano - is unified through the monumental and unique drum patterns, as the characters of the four players are at once individually unmistakably and irrevocably intertwined.

The four members of Cyclopean have worked together previously: Friedman and Liebezeit s Secret Rhythms IV was released in 2011 on Friedman´s label Nonplace and is the most recent of their releases together which began in 2002; Podmore and Schmidt s collaborations have included two albums released as Schmidt & Kumo as well as more recent work on The Lost Tapes and Podmore has also worked with Liebezeit in the past.

After Can disbanded Liebezeit and Schmidt stayed close and continued to work together, notably on Schmidt s opera Gormenghast, which Podmore also worked closely on.

Cyclopean is the first time that Friedman, Liebezeit, Podmore and Schmidt have worked together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can-like 20 Feb 2014
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
It's the nearest you're going to get to classic Can. Jaki remains the best drummer alive; his precision is something to behold. Thank you; I didn't think I'd get a treat such as this from the Can camp. The only way to better it would be to get Malcolm Mooney in on vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic 30 July 2013

I love everything related to the musiciand from CAN and their collaboration with other musicians.

I would recommend this for all music lovers who wish to wander through their imagination.

The vinyl recording is far superior to the MP3 copy

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but slightly disappointing 6 Mar 2013
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
Any release featuring ex Can members will always be worth a listen, and these tracks have some good qualities. Jaki Liebezeit's drumming is up to the usual standard, providing a hypnotic backbone to ambient soundscapes. There's some interesting sounds going on, but after a few listens it seems to be lacking something - it's worth a listen but there's not much to it.

Looking forward to more music from these guys. This EP has some great rhythms and tones weaving amongst themselves. I had only heard the word 'cyclopean' before in an H.P. Lovecraft story, describing the strange architecture of R'lyeh where stones protrude at impossible angles, leaving you wondering which way is up. A description fitting for Cyclopean's music, adventitious or not.
