Product Description

Product Description

More and more of us are turning to cycling, whether as an inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly means of getting to work or school, or as a way of exploring Britain's towns, cities and countryside. More than 75 per cent of UK residents live within two miles of the National Cycle Network, and a continuous program of development led by Sustrans (the UK's leading sustainable transport charity) means it is growing all the time. "Cycling in the UK" is the official guide to the National Cycle Network, bringing together the expertise of two of Britain's great pioneering transport organizations (The AA and Sustrans) to create this comprehensive cycling guide. The guide contains all the essential information for planning a cycling trip in Britain - practical advice on what to take, difficulty rating and where to stop along the way, plus expert advice on practical issues such as what to wear and how to stay safe on your bike, as well as tips on basic maintenance. With clearly marked maps, recommended rides, details of what to see, and superb photography, "Cycling in the UK" provides all the information you need to see the best of Britain from the best seat in the house.

The problems raised by reviewers of the last edition of this book seem to be relevant again. The book looks brilliant, the photographs are excellent and it certainly whets the appetite, but it is really only a introductory pedal round some of the highlights of the UK's cycle network and it only provides a taster for longer routes. Routes described are usually between 10 and 20 miles and seem to be targeted at families wanting to get their young ones out on the road and people at average levels of fitness. Fingers crossed it achieves that aim.
Buy this book if you want a good looking book which offers some good ideas for rides, but do not buy this if you want a comprehensive, in-depth overview of the UK's national cycle network.

As other reviews of this book have stated, it's not particularly suited for seasoned cyclers. But what it is absolutely super for is people who are just getting in to cycling. My Mum has just started cycling after 48 years of not being on a bike, and is loving it but understably is not ready for lots of roads so this book was perfect as a gift - it's full of lovely pictures and great ideas for places to ride that don't involve lots of busy roads with information on places to stop for refreshments etc. She and my Dad loved getting it for Christmas.

A pleasant, readable book and a good source for ideas and dreams for the long winter evenings. In places a little basic, but that's not really a criticism, given the purpose of the book. My only gripe is the number of maps that are printed with east/west vertically and the text rotated giving the impression that it's actually north/south. I appreciate that it has been done to save page space, but I'd sooner have a map printed properly and turn the book through 90 degrees if necessary. If you're used to looking at maps then you'll find some of the areas are unrecogniseable at first sight.
