Product Description

Product Description

Cycling remains one of the most popular leisure activities in Britain today, and continuing numbers of people are taking up the sport whether for leisure enjoyment for all the family, or for health and environmental reasons. One of the greatest concentrations of population is in the South East, and because of the congested and dangerous roads there is a growing need for a useful guide to safe, traffic-free cycling around the area. Cyclists living in the area want quick, easy access to a range of enjoyable new cycling routes where they can quickly escape from their usual crowded environment and explore quiet routes in attractive natural or man-made surroundings. In recent years there have been many initiatives to develop traffic-free routes through national or local government schemes and organisations such as Sustrans, but it is often impracticable for leisure cyclists to keep right up to date with the latest information on the many thousands of miles of paths and lanes where it is possible, and legal, for cyclists to pursue their hobby away from traffic. All the more welcome then, is this brand new title from experienced author and cyclist Nick Cotton, who brings together 25 of the best routes in the South East. As well as offering practical general advice for the cyclist, the author gives clear instructions for each route, a useful diagrammatic map, suggestions on where best to park and/or start the trip, distance, gradients and hills, places of interest and suggested refreshment stops along the way or close to the route. This volume covers all of Kent, West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire as far west as the A34. A couple of rides also go into London: along the Thames from Greenwich past the Thames Barrier to Erith and the along the Thames from Weybridge to Putney Bridge (there is also a circuit of Richmond Park).

As a general guide for family friendly cycle routes then this can't be faulted, with a mixture of well known tracks and unique rides its inspired my family to get out and give it a go. However don't expect to be able to jump on your bike with this book in hand and hit the trail, with some exceptions you will need to trace the route on a more detail map before you head off.

A very useful book as we have just bought bicycles and don't want to tangle with traffic. Pity about the snow stopping us going out more. Recommend this book to all South East cyclists Quite interesting to walkers too.

shorter cycles 20 Sep 2010
By Andrea
was disappointed when I received this- a keen cyclist friend recommended the old nick cotton series which doesnt seem to be available any more and I had hoped that this was the re-vamped version... however the cycles are very short and there are no OS maps included, so anyone wanting to follow a route might need to also buy the relevant OS map. Also the routes are very short- e.g. 9 or 18 miles- not really worth travelling out of london for... I was looking for longer day cycle trips.. If you are looking for inspiration for some short cycles this book would be great though, and is attractive to look at and read...
