Product Description

Product Description

In May 2013, at the age of 61, Elan Homer and his pal, Rob West, embarked on their first long distance cycle journey - 750 miles from Santander in northern Spain to Roscoff in Brittany. This is the story of Elan's preparations and the trip itself, ridden during one of the most miserably wet and windy Mays for some time. The book describes the various incidents, many funny, encountered along the way and, for those considering a similar cycle tour, gives practical advice on what to do .......... and what not to do.

It was difficult to know how to rate this book. There was some useful information and it was interesting to read of the two friends experiences. I certainly learnt as much about what not to do as I did about what I would do the same. Unfortunately for me the book appeared to be more a list of road numbers, hotels and meals with not enough about the places themselves and the thoughts and feelings of the two friends. When these were included it became a far more interesting book to read. To me it seemed the achievement of cycling from Spain to Brittany was the only point of the trip rather than the enjoyment of the journey itself. It was only towards the end when Rob got his way that the journey became more interesting and enjoyable. I did enjoy the account of the everyday necessities such as finding places to get enough snacks to refuel themselves and the attempts to dry their washing. I am planning to do a cycle trip myself and found these helpful. I just hope I get better weather on my trip.

This is a travel log but did have some useful ideas. It didn't make me want to follow in their footsteps or inspire me like a lot of other travel logs have done. It was a shame the weather was so wet but I admire the fact that they kept going regardless. I was actually quite pleased when I got to the end, I kept waiting for something to 'happen' but nothing actually did, other than day to day trivia.

I loved the writing style, easy to read and descriptive . I was able to paint a mental picture of the journey and the people who they met.
