This book describes in a highly readable and understated style some of the wonderful opportunities for cycle tourism right on our doorstep. I have based 4 cycling holidays to the Alpes de Haute Provence on it, and one of the revelations of this book is that the stunning mountain scenery is within the reach of any reasonably fit cyclist: because French alpine roads have gentle gradients, it is possible to ascend the highest cols tackled in the Tour de France. Follow Mr Hughes' advice on when to travel and there will always be comfortable and affordable accommodation available en route.
