Book Description

29 Aug 2012

Over 25 Interesting, Historic, and Cultural Rides. More at:

Cycling Along Europe's Rivers is a "How To" book on taking self-guided bike trips to Europe that are affordable and easy to organize.

The book is based on the author's extensive experience, including nearly 20 years of annual cycle trips to Europe.

Rhine River, Danube River, Elbe River, Loire River, Po River, Neckar River, Mosel River, Main River, and more.

• How to plan and prepare.

• How to get what you need to the start of a ride and home again --bikes, panniers, and you.

• What to bring and what not -- how to keep your load small.

• How to handle getting around and other logistics.

• Bike, Lodging and Eating advice.

• Safety, Security, and Communication advice.

• Route recommendations and key features.

In short, everything you need to know to have a first-class, comfortable, flexible, and interesting riding trip to Europe without spending a fortune or going with an organized package. We budget about $120 per day per person (less if sharing rooms) plus airfare for hotels, meals, and everything else for rides that are typically 8-14 days in length.

Rivers make the perfect touring -- flat, easy to navigate, interesting towns, historical sites, and relatively short distances between stops and sites. These trips are for everyone -- from weekend warriors to casual riders, from the young to the old.

Our routes guide riders through Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Italy, Switzerland, and, Slovakia, and utilize the detailed maps found in the terrific German Bikeline map guides.

"Cycling Along Europe's Rivers" is a companion book to the European Bikeline Map Guides. It will tell you how and where to go, which Bikeline map guide to use for route details, and how to use these maps. That's all you need! Please Note: While the book does provide over 25 routes, suggested overnight stops, and associated mileage, it does not provide turn-by-turn details because this is not necessary for these trips given GPS, generally well-marked trails, the very detailed Bikeline companion guides, and the rivers themselves providing the ultimate route guide!

Cities and regions in Europe you can visit include, among many other: the Danube Gorge, Amsterdam, Leiden, the Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Arnhem, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz, Cochem, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel, the Rhine Falls, Lake Bodensee, Konstanz, Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, Vienna, Bratislava, Gyor, Tata, Budapest, Cesky Krumlov, Prague, Dresden, Meissen, Wittenberg, Potsdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Hameln, Hann. Munden, Orleans, Chambord, Blois, Amboise, Chenonceaux, Chinon, Saumur, Angers, St. Nazaire, Milan, Cremona, Parma, Mantua, Chioggia, and Venice. Even a brief mention of the C&O Canal and Erie Canal rides as warm-ups.

Cycling Along Europe's Rivers is practical and well-organized. We have loved these trips and think you will, too!

1.0 out of 5 stars cycling along europe's rivers 14 Feb 2013
By dave
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not a touring cycle guide, unfortunately it is a collection of the author's black and white holiday snaps and a series of black and white photocopy maps that cannot be read.

I was really dissapointed the idea of a cycle touring guide along the great rivers of europe is a good one but this is not the book to bring it to the UK market.

I had to give this one star as the system does not except a zero star entry.

this is nothing more than a very general overview with a few recommendations for hotels and places to visit. in terms of actually planning to cycle its no help, as it doesnt even tell you where the cycle routes begin or how to find them. the maps are so tiny they are illegible and on a minute scale even if you could read them. not what i was hoping for at all - back to looking for some suitable maps.

We wanted something to help us plan our Rhine and Danube cycle trip, but as we'd already done several similar trips, we were hoping for more detail. The map reproduction was just not good enough to use. However it does help build confidence that such trips are do-able, and it does give pointers to other sources, so not bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Any Travel Cyclist 19 Dec 2012
By Wendy - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My husband and I are avid cyclists and each summer we plan a 4-5 week bike trip to various countries throughout Europe. It is always a challenge to plan these trips because of the limited number of decent books that are available when designing your own personalized trip. Well, we hit the jackpot when we purchased Cycling Along Europe's Rivers, by Michael J. Lyons. It is without a doubt one of best cycling travel books on the market. What puts Michael Lyon's book at the five star-level is how he has imparted so much essential information into this 337- page book. He includes distances for the various trips, level of difficulty, and detailed descriptions of the routes. Our trip this year involves cycling from the North Sea to Prague. Author, Michael Lyon provides alternate routes, so we have the option to explore Berlin, Hamburg Loop, or other areas of the Czech Republic. The route details are clear and concise and include ride highlights, which help you decide if you really want to ride to this destination. He offers excellent suggestions for museums, places to dine, and where to sleep and website links are included. Best of all, he uses bikeline maps, which are the finest European cycling maps on the market. We have already cycled a number of the routes included in his book and the information was spot on!! Even though we are very seasoned travel cyclists we felt his trip preparation and safety pointers were outstanding and we gleaned a few more travel tips that we will use this summer. If this is your first attempt at cycle touring or even if you are a well-seasoned traveler, we highly recommend you purchase this book. Happy travels and may the wind always be at your back! 5.0 out of 5 stars You won't need a tour company anymore 10 Dec 2012
By Lisa Hicks - Published on
As a seasoned cyclist and participant in many organized tours both in the USA and abroad, I found this book amazingly helpful and instructive. We are anticipating planning our own ride in Europe and found this book extremely helpful in our planning process. It provided great ideas for new routes that we wouldn't have know about otherwise and great ideas for organizing the travel. What a find--so glad I discovered this book. It's a must have for European cycling vacations!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 22 Jan 2013

Having done some cycle touring in the past I was a little sceptical about what I might learn from this book. I was very pleasantly surprised at what I read. The book is a wealth of information for both the experienced and beginner touring cyclist who might want to bike the trails and pathways along the various rivers of Europe. The many excellent insightful tips alone are worth the price of the book because it is apparent that they have been gathered from years of first hand experience and can be applied and used immediately by every level of touring cyclist for a far more successful and stress free experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent planning book 8 April 2013

Good coverage of major river rides but it would be nice if there were more pictures and they were in color.

The maps could have more detail and some more specific suggestions on places to stay would be helpful.

Absolutely recommend it for someone taking their first self planned ride in Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for our needs 12 Mar 2013
By Maggie - Published on
We are planning a 2 month self-guided trip around Belgium, Holland and Germany next summer so this book came at just the right time. It has a wealth of valuable, practical first-hand information about where to go and how to get there. It also has lots of valuable links to other information. The thing I like most about the book is that the author is not afraid to state an opinion and set priorities for the best places. The maps are a little fuzzy - as he says it is meant as a companion to an actual route guide. Since reading this book cover-to-cover we have made a lot of changes to our plans for the summer and are convinced we will have a vastly improved cycling experience thanks to his guidance.
