CycleOps Pro Series Super Magneto Trainer (Incl DVD)The Super Magneto Pro arrived in eco-friendly packaging with no polystyrene in sight. The operating manual is just sheets of A4 stapled together but is easy to follow.
The trainer is easy to set up - push in a button and extend each leg. Attaching the bike is also straight forward using the supplied skewer. There was a small amount of trial and error getting the resistance unit tight enough to the tyre to prevent slipping. A levelling foot helps with uneven floor surfaces, but it is only on one of the legs. So, if the floor is sloping the wrong way there is not a lot you can do (apart from turn the complete unit around).
I have the trainer sitting on thin foam type mats on a concrete floor and it has not moved an inch, even with some vigorous pedalling. It holds my bike very solidly with minimal (far less than normal road riding) sideways movement. In short, the whole setup is rock solid.
As far as sound levels are concerned, I wouldn't class the trainer as noisy. All that I can hear is whirring and air flow. I do, however, need to crank up the iPod a notch when I'm in full workout mode. It is possible that the concrete floor and matting deadens some noise.
Pedalling resistance is based upon speed. As a result, going at 15mph, for example, there is very little resistance and at first I thought there wouldn't be enough. However, as your speed increases witchcraft happens within the resistance unit and pedalling gradually becomes harder. The resistance ramps up faster depending upon which power curve has been selected.
There is little vibration from the unit (far less than when on a typical road). However, as speed increases the unit automatically adjusts the resistance and during these transitions there is a certain amount of vibration until the new setting kicks in. If you hold the speed at which these changes occur the vibration continues. Your speed needs to increase beyond this point for the smoothness to resume.
This is my first trainer, so I have nothing to compare it against, but I am impressed, and that doesn't happen easily or very often. Would probably warrant a 5 star rating if it weren't for the vibration and there only being one levelling foot.
