What is it ?
This is a complete photo management and adjustment system. It provides a decent cataloguing system and lots of adjustments to improve photos and make them into works of art. There is also a printing module which allows lots of layout options.
The software is compatible with Windows and Mac systems.
In the box.
You get the software DVD and a starter manual which guides the user through the main features. A detailed manual comes on the disk in PDF format. Also included was a digital copy certificate. This allows the user to download a copy from the Cyberlink website in case you have one of the machines that no longer includes a DVD drive.
This was very simple, just put the DVD in the drive and follow the instructions. All the user has to do is choose the language and input the serial number to get it going.
The main screen consists of 5 main tabs. Library, Adjustment, Edit, Show and Print. New users would normally start with the library option and import their pictures files and then categorise them. The cyberrlink system is quite simple and easy to follow. Pictures can be categorised into places, dates, ratings and several user customisable options.
The adjustment option has two main tabs Manual and Pre-set. In manual you select a main topic from the list on the left had side of the menu. The adjustment boxes are quite comprehensive and you then use sliders to adjust the effect. Here you can change everything from colour balance to lens corrections. Cyberlink has included all the adjustment necessary and has everything the competition has. You can download new adjustments from the Cyberlink website.Read more ›
One might believe that this market was totally dominated by Adobe Photoshop Elements, and it probably is, but Adobe's methods are not the only ones available and Cyber Link are a mature software house with a great deal of experience and they offer in Photo Director 5 a truly up to date alternative.
When you open up the application it displays the first sample photo in its library and offers you the options of Adjustment, Edit, Slideshow or Print. At first sight you might question what he difference is between "Adjustment" and "Edit", but the former is a considerable list of slider controls that allow full adjustment of everything from tint, tone, tinge, glow, edge, colour, highlights, shadows, sharpness, noise, keystone, chromatic aberration, vignette, fisheye distortion and more. The latter gives a slightly more Photoshop set of filters and tools such as toothbrush, eye blinger, skin smoother, wrinkle remover, body shaper, a range of photo effects and even watermark creation.
Almost everyone is trying to elbow into this market and most software houses are trying to make something as close to Photoshop Elements as possible. Cyberlink have followed their own creativity to produce not another inadequate clone, but instead a very different product altogether.
If you are not Adobe trained, in fact if you are not trained at all, and want some photo editing software that does all the regular jobs but still allows you to be creative with your end product, then not only might this be the product for you, but I contend that it actually is!Read more ›
There are two versions of PhotoDirector 5 – Ultra and Suite, of which Suite is the more advanced. Both are Windows PC and Mac compatible. The software is available as a download from the Cyberlink website or as a hard copy disk. One advantage of the download option is that it’s currently (at the time of review) available as a 30 day free trial. The hard copy also contains a digital download, user activation code for the DVD, and provides a basic instruction booklet saving time and paper for the user (there’s also a full PDF instruction manual included).
System compatibility is Windows XP and above, minimum 2GB RAM, minimum 128MB graphics card memory for the full 3D editing facility, and 10 GB hard disk space for DVD production.
I loaded onto Windows 7, quick start up with no problems.
The key features I noted are the ease of which photos can be selected and imported for editing – the selected pictures are categorised and filed to enable quick access for editing.
Tools I found particularly useful – and easy to use – are the portrait specific area options like red-eye, wrinkle removal, tooth brush teeth whitener, skin smoother. The more general tools are obviously included, such as white balance, contrast and saturation levels.
In summary, I found this a powerful yet user friendly tool for organising and editing my photo collection, suitable for both beginners like myself and with a range of more powerful creative tools for the advanced user.
