4.0 out of 5 stars Very good. But the music is dissapointing., 18 Jun 2001
When I saw this excellent series on TV it was shown as a single movie. Plus the TV version had an amazing soundtrack to it. This version has the original Japanise soundtrack. That's good if you happen to like that kind of music. I preferred the translated version.

This DVD also has the original Japanise graphics. So all the computer monitors in the movie are showing text in japanise.

All this included it's still an amazing piece of animation with great stories and great characters. And the Japanise text and music does not alter the fact that this is an excellent example of Anime.

I only give it 4 stars because of the lack of DVD features.

Also, it's kinda fun to watch the sub-titles. They are a direct translation of the original Japanise script that was trashed when it came over here because it was so darn cheesey. It adds a differant twist to the images.

I just thought it was kinda fun to watch ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine example of cyberpunk anime!, 8 Oct 2004
I have been a great fan of this series ever since I first started watching anime in my late school days, and I can only criticise it for one thing: the series should have been longer than three episodes!

Cyber City Oedo 808 has never actually enjoyed an official UK release, and so if like me you have finally (and thankfully!) waved goodbye to most of your VHS collection, this can be a thorn in your side, like so many semi-obscure titles that may never see the light of a DVD release, or may not be released on DVD for a while (i'm still holding on to 1 VHS title which I cannot replace!). Like many other people who have written reviews, mine is the verson where the soundtrack is the original japanese and the computer readouts are not translated (although, the character's conversations have been dubbed) and the episodes are titled differently from the UK Manga VHS releases (e.g. The Decoy was called Psychic Trooper in the UK). Still, this does not detract from the quality of the series; the characters are excellent, the animation well directed and the overall quality of the disc is more than satisfactory (a 5.1 audio mix wouldn't go amiss though). However, as others have written, there are very few extras, in fact only some pretty dodgy trailers for other titles released by the same manufacturer (wide birth required).

Hopefully it will find it's way on to DVD for an official UK release sometime soon, when you'll be able to pick it up from our good friends at amazon. Until then, if cyberpunk anime is your thing, check out AD Police, which simlilarly to Cyber City, is a three episode cyberpunk Manga series and is now available on UK DVD release, or stick with the VHS releases of Cyber City, which can still be picked up in the UK quite easily (i've held on to mine until the official Manga DVD is issued!).

4.0 out of 5 stars A true classic but the best manga film ever??, 24 Nov 2001
Without doubt Cyber City represents what a top quality cyber-punk manga oav should be like. It's characters are all memorable, decent villains, pretty good quality dubbing/animation etc. However although it IS A CLASSIC that every manga fan should have, it does have numerous faults. I felt the character development was pretty much non-existent, with such well created characters it was a shame that we didn't learn more about their pasts. The three stories seem pretty dis-jointed, personally thinking the third story being the weakest. In conclusion a great manga film that stands the test of time, a personal favourite but many better films out there
