The first book in the Dalemark quartet. A wonderful set of characters in an all-too believable fantasy world. Not the usual set of goblins and dragons; instead we have decidedly human characters with recognisable problems. There is some magic, but it is subtly wrapped up in mysticism and music. Echoes of both Celtic and Scandanavian myth abound. The story overtly is of a family's flight from tyranny to safety in Northern lands. But it's really about growing up, about young Moril learning about himself, learning that first impressions of others are not always correct, and learning how to use his talents. In every way a wonderful adventure story that adults and children alike will love. And it's only the first of four!

Superb 16 May 2003
Format:Paperback
The Dalemark Quartet is an absolute classic - what I like most about it is that the first three books seem to be totally unlinked except for being set in the same 'world' of Dalemark. They completely turn the standard sequential trilogy/quartet model on its head. The characters are different from book to book. They don't coexist in time. Each is a compelling and brilliantly written stand-alone novel, but....
When I came to the final novel in the quartet I was awe-struck by Wynne Jones's deft handling of the ideas across the books. The links the parallels and the cunning interconnectedness of all four books slowly and magically unfold before you. I would give anything to write so well, so surely and so winningly. Every child's bookshelves should hold this series.

Diana Wynne Jones NEVER talks down to kids in her books. Forget the Harry Potter books, Diana Wynne Jones started it all. cart and Cwidder is a brilliant example of this. A travelling musical family rove around the land of Dalemark living an almost normal life. Then it suddenly all goes wrong, and nothing is as it seems. A mysterious and powerful cwidder (which is a funny old type of guitar) falls into the hands of the youngest and he must learn to not only play it, but to stop it from playing him! His family, and the rest of the lands of Dalemark, rely on him.

This is a really good start to the Dalemark series, followed by Drowned Ammet, the Spllcoats, and finished by the Crown of Dalemark. Well worth getting into.
