One of a growing number of female-centred dramas, the first series of Cutting It was a sleeper hit for the BBC. Though its rival hairdresser premise seems fluffy, its classy gloss, off-beat scripting and strong cast make it as addictive as many of the outstanding TV series coming from the US. The drama unfolds when ambitious hairdresser Allie Henshall (Sarah Parish) wants to open a second salon. But her husband and business partner would prefer to start a family. Even when she puts in a bid for a property opposite her salon, Allie is beaten by rival hairdresser Mia Bevan (Amanda Holden). As a business war begins between Allie's Henshall Ferraday salon and Mia's Blade Runner, Allie has to overcome the reappearance of an old flame, Mia's husband, who is happy to rekindle his relationship with her.

As the relationship histories among the characters become absurdly intertwined, it is to the cast's credit that the human dynamics of the story surpass its plot. Though there are certainly moments of parody (take Mia's yogic warm-ups with her staff each morning) and questionable twists, Cutting It gives its leading ladies some sharp and funny lines to work with and the space to do so. Both Parish and Holden run the gamut of emotions despite the seemingly clear-cut good woman / bitch divide between their characters initially. Their actions may strain the limits of credibility, but these women hold attention effortlessly. --Laura Bushell

Well i think my title has summed up 'Cutting It'!
A fantastic series which has you on the edge of your seat most of the time. Whether your willing Allie to pick Gavin over Finn (or vice-versa!) or crying out for the Henshall sisters to see Mia for who she really is!
It captivates the world of love triangles, affairs and most of all Hairdressing!
Overall a fantastic series and worth owning to watch over and over again - especially the outtakes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex, drama and peroxide 7 May 2003
By Heather
With the second series having kicked off on BBC1 in May 2003, this is a great chance for fans to relive the original 'Cutting It' or those who are new to the show to catch up on the background. Sarah Parrish shines as Allie, the ambitious hairdresser caught between her loyal, family-man husband Gavin and Finn, her bad-boy first love, and with a few more skeletons in the closet besides the turbulence of her love life. Domestic dramas edge into the work place, whilst the rivalries between Henshall-Ferraday (Allie's salon) and Blade Runner, the salon spearheaded by Finn's wife Mia (a brilliantly manipulative woman played by Amanda Holden with lashings of bitchiness), are more personal than professional. In all, a hugely entertaining drama with a talented cast and a broad appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars YAY! It's here at last!! 25 Jun 2003

I dunno about you, but me and the girls would take tuesday nights off in 2002. We'd turn off all phones and put on our PJs and eat ice cream while catching up with our new best friends at Henshall-Ferraday.
Yes, "Cutting It" had it all: a hateful, vengeful love child, adultery, back stabbing, a calculating blonde (or rather two) and the most barmy hairdresses in Manchester. And that's not even mentioning the lovely Jason Merrells!
We screamed at Ali to stay with Gavin! That Finn was no good! We cried as we shared their pain... and we gladly do it all over agin!
If you watched the 1st series, buy the DVD anyway coz it's just far too cool and if you've just seen series 2, buy the 1st to see what you missed.
Heck, just buy it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Should they cut it? 19 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Cutting It was a series shown on BBC 1 and it had most of the younger generation hooked. It showed hairdressers at war, and with a gripping storyline it made itself known. The characters had history with each other that was made clear throughout the seires, and although it sometimes became confusing, it kept everybody interested. The things the hairdressers got up to were amusing to say the least, and you could see the rivalry not only between business' but also within love lives, and social. This series is far superior to most tv series today as it has you gripped right from the start. I would reccomend this series to anyone who is up for a laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutrting it seroes 1 29 Jun 2014
This is a TV series that I missed. Having now bought it as a DVD set I am very pleased with the programme. I particularly enjoy sarah Parish, first class actor, and Amanda Holden who was at that time proving her skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, its just a drama about bitching.. 23 Jun 2014

I got through one episode, barely. I like Sarah Parish in Mistresses, but the story for this series is just bitchiness for the sake of it. Needed a better script.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting it - a Cut above the Rest 26 Jan 2010
Gripping drama about love, revenge and hair styling all summed up into one tidy package.

In a cut-throat world of hair styling, Allie Henshall and her husband Gavin Farraday seem to have it all - a successful business, a great marriage, and an impressive clientelle. But not all is as it seems: Starry-eyed Allie still feels she has something left to accomplish in her profession, while Gavin is angling for her to take time off so they can focus on concieving a baby. Allie's reluctance is enough to leave Gavin slightly irritable but when she goes against him and announces the Henshall Farraday business is going to expand to the shop across the street, it feels like a step too far.

Everyone's life is thrown irrevokably into turmoil when Allie is outbid for the shop by a rival hair dressing company - Blade Runners, run by the beautiful opportunist Mia Bevan, who has already wormed her way into their lives to suss out the competition. Allie is taken aback by the new opposition's blatant move to across the street opposing her salon - especially when Blade Runners is stealing the Henshall-Farraday clients, but devastated to learn that Mia's husband is Finn, an old flame with whom Allie has a particularly painful past with.

Finn, an opportunist and blatant sex addict, makes it clear to Allie that he intends to pick up where they left off eighteen years before he ran off and left her, while Allie makes it clear she wants nothing more to do with him. At the expense of his marriage to the success hungry Mia, Finn will do anything to get to Allie, even if it means sleeping with her sisters, and helping Mia's new business to succeed while Allie's fails.
