Amazon.co.uk Review
One of a growing number of female-centred dramas, the first series of Cutting It was a sleeper hit for the BBC. Though its rival hairdresser premise seems fluffy, its classy gloss, off-beat scripting and strong cast make it as addictive as many of the outstanding TV series coming from the US. The drama unfolds when ambitious hairdresser Allie Henshall (Sarah Parish) wants to open a second salon. But her husband and business partner would prefer to start a family. Even when she puts in a bid for a property opposite her salon, Allie is beaten by rival hairdresser Mia Bevan (Amanda Holden). As a business war begins between Allie's Henshall Ferraday salon and Mia's Blade Runner, Allie has to overcome the reappearance of an old flame, Mia's husband, who is happy to rekindle his relationship with her.

As the relationship histories among the characters become absurdly intertwined, it is to the cast's credit that the human dynamics of the story surpass its plot. Though there are certainly moments of parody (take Mia's yogic warm-ups with her staff each morning) and questionable twists, Cutting It gives its leading ladies some sharp and funny lines to work with and the space to do so. Both Parish and Holden run the gamut of emotions despite the seemingly clear-cut good woman / bitch divide between their characters initially. Their actions may strain the limits of credibility, but these women hold attention effortlessly. --Laura Bushell

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex, drama and peroxide, 7 May 2003
By Heather (London, UK) - See all my reviews
With the second series having kicked off on BBC1 in May 2003, this is a great chance for fans to relive the original 'Cutting It' or those who are new to the show to catch up on the background. Sarah Parrish shines as Allie, the ambitious hairdresser caught between her loyal, family-man husband Gavin and Finn, her bad-boy first love, and with a few more skeletons in the closet besides the turbulence of her love life. Domestic dramas edge into the work place, whilst the rivalries between Henshall-Ferraday (Allie's salon) and Blade Runner, the salon spearheaded by Finn's wife Mia (a brilliantly manipulative woman played by Amanda Holden with lashings of bitchiness), are more personal than professional. In all, a hugely entertaining drama with a talented cast and a broad appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars YAY! It's here at last!!, 25 Jun 2003

I dunno about you, but me and the girls would take tuesday nights off in 2002. We'd turn off all phones and put on our PJs and eat ice cream while catching up with our new best friends at Henshall-Ferraday.

Yes, "Cutting It" had it all: a hateful, vengeful love child, adultery, back stabbing, a calculating blonde (or rather two) and the most barmy hairdresses in Manchester. And that's not even mentioning the lovely Jason Merrells!

We screamed at Ali to stay with Gavin! That Finn was no good! We cried as we shared their pain... and we gladly do it all over agin!

If you watched the 1st series, buy the DVD anyway coz it's just far too cool and if you've just seen series 2, buy the 1st to see what you missed.

Heck, just buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who ever knew your hairdresser had a life!, 22 Jul 2003
This first series of Cutting it, centred around the tangled interwoven relationships of the employees of a Manchester hair salon, are just gripping! I just couldn't miss a single episode to wash my hair! So many relationship tribulations, career battles to be won, obstacles and complications to eradicate, and secrets to explode in just eight episodes! Can't wait for more!
