Review

Short snappy pieces wonderfully written, wise and full of warmth. While a gentle ribbing of satire runs through the book, Drennan is never cynical.

Product Description

Cute Hoors and Pious Protestors is a series of short political essays that captures the essence of the Irish political system. Our politicians were peripheral during the era of the Tiger, but now that poor Breakfast-Roll Man is starving everyone from political anoraks to fans of Mario Rosenstock is intrigued by the secret characteristics of a class that will either save us or send us to the bottom of the ocean. This entertaining, gossipy text gives a unique insider s account of the isolated little soap-opera of the Dail. Themes include the ambiguous sex appeal of Bertie Ahern; strange tales from the court of King Cowen, the man with a political death wish; and the Unbearable Lightness of Enda. Why does Labour work in theory but not in practice? We meet the perfect FF TD (walking around saluting the people). Then there are lovely girls and nags in dresses, the strange role of women in Irish politics. And more: there is Michael Noonan s lesson on how corner boys do not make good centre backs. The clever madness of Conor Lenihan. The Great Gatsby meets the Bailey Brothers: enchantment and greed in the Galway Races Garden of Desire. And even worse, the awful rise of the pious new moral FF. There is philosophy: whatever you do, do nothing (tales from the Joe Jacob School of human governance). Mysteries are explained: Michael Creed, Mary Coughlan and the real difference between Fianna Gael and Fine Fail. From Martin Cullen we learn the art of walking into garden rakes. James Mc Daid and other great eccentrics... And lots more in this dazzling kaleidoscope of the Great Irish Politics Game.

I was looking forward to reading this book, based on what I had heard about it, and from it, on the radio. People seemed to think it was a a great read.

I was very disappointed. The author is constantly reaching for the clever phrase or memorable soundbyte. This is very irritating after the first few such occasions.

Unfortunately, so much has happened since the book was written that I had to keep referring to the publication date to reassure myself that it was a relatively recent publication.

The various allusions are completely obscure for those not already fully up to speed on the events referred to.

In the acknowledgements there is a reference to a "vague project ... completed so swiftly". Unfortunately the signs are on it. It reads like a rushed job; many of the remarks are now out of date/context; and the remaining substance can be very skimpy. Also the combination of the writing style and (lack of) punctuation meant I had to reread a number of sentences to get their meaning.

Frankly, the best thing about the book is the fantastic cover, showing cartoon versions of the party leaders in an identity parade/lineup.

A disappointing read. The book needs pruning, editing, and a lot of contextual additions before one could really pass proper judgment on its potential to be a good book.

atrocious! 24 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I read it! From front to back like a good Irishman. I could not or did not want to get it. The context was atrocious . With long and complex sentence structures , no point or conclusion to the paragraphs!. What a waste of money. I suspect it may have being written by a Japanese technical manual writer, with undertones of a UN rules of engagement committee thrown in.
God save Ireland!
