Book Description

10 Feb 2011
Expert crafter Nicki Trench brings you 35 easy-to-follow crochet patterns that will teach you how to crochet. A crochet teacher and author with over 20 years' experience, Nicki has designed a series of patterns that will guide you through those initial stitches to producing beautiful projects incorporating a wide range of crochet techniques. Crochet Know-how explains all the stitches with clear step-by-step artworks and instructions. Next, discover three chapters packed with patterns to improve your skills. First is Starting Out, where you will find a simple springtime throw and a pretty hat for a toddler - you'll be amazed how easy and quick the projects are to create. Once you've mastered these, move on to something more challenging in the Practice Makes Perfect chapter. There are cute gifts for babies and young children, including baby blocks, bibs and blankets, or treat yourself to a pair of gloves in soft double knit yarn or the chunky seashells scarf to keep you warm on chilly mornings. Finally, Confident Crocheting has more advanced patterns, from a family of adorable Russian dolls to the cherub dress with decorative picot stitching.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm keeping this one 18 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I am terrible for buying crochet books because I'm inspired by their cover or a review and then passing them on because really there was nothing that grabbed me. This book is different. I find the photographs inspirational and the patterns easy to follow. The book is divided into 3 sections. Starting Out, which has all the usual diagrams for complete newbies, and then simple projects all of which I'd happily make. I've already done bunting, a round stripy cushion, a bag using small granny squares and wash cloths. The section section 'Practice makes perfect' has 11 projects, again almost all usable. I've done a scarf, baby slippers & plan on at least 4 more. The final section of 9 projects includes bears, a pretty tea cosy, russian dolls & a gorgeous scarf - my next project.
All the recommended yarns are available in the UK. I think all in all Nicki's book does what it says on the cover - 35 adorable, cute & easy projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight 22 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This delightful book is full of gorgeously simple and not quite so simple patterns for producing crochet projects to beautify your home, yourself and any children not yet old enough to run screaming from anything handmade.
The illustrative photographs are shot in a home of such delicious faded splendour that you may well find yourself being able to justify any battered furniture you may own by simply adding a throw or cushion worked from this book.
Highly recommended by Mrs Danvers (who owns much battered furniture).

Format:Paperback
I bought this book because I want to make and sell small hand made gifts at local bazzars and craft fairs. It does not disappoint and is full of small and larger projects suitable for beginners and those who have crochet experiance. The instructions are easy to follow and the pictures are well photographed. A must for all those crafters out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book but a little confusing at times 21 Nov 2011
By bettyb
Format:Paperback
This was the first Crochet book I bought. As a knitter, I finally decided to branch out into crochet. This book was recommended. I love the patterns. It's very up to date and not at all old fashioned. I love the choice of colours used in the projects as well as the projects themselves. I also found the lay out very easy to read. I did at times have to try a couple of different ways of doing something to work out what it meant (as I am a complete beginner) but after I understood how to read the pattern, it was easy and very enjoyable. One word of warning, I have made a couple of projects and most of them have been fine, however, I found the pattern for the scarf did not work at all. I pulled it apart 3 times then finally asked a lady who is in her 70's and has been crocheting for longer than I've been alive, to find out what I was doing wrong. She couldn't work out where I had gone wrong in the pattern. Finally I decided to follow the picture (and make up my own pattern) rather than the pattern in the book and it turned out really well. That is the only pattern I have had a problem with so far.

Saying that I do love the book and am buying it for my Mum for Christmas (but I will write my pattern into the book for her! lol).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Crochet Book 14 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I am telling you it is GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS - the patterns are lovely, the wool they use is lovely and there seems to be something for everyone - little practice crochets like Jam Jar Covers, to chair mats (which will make a FABULOUS 1st project for when my kids are older), to gorgeous throws and bags. It is fabulously structured - patterns are clearly marked as "beginner", "improver" and "enthusiast". I like these labellings, as "improver" to me sounds like I can have a go and I may even manage enthusiast one day!!! The beginning of the book as a guide to all the stitched you will need - so "their double crochet" or "their treble". This is great for making sure you are not getting the American and British stitches confused, as well as serving as a reminder as to "what these actually are again"... I last crocheted about 2 months ago, so as a beginner I did need to revisit all the stitches again to remind me what I need to do.. and then I had a go: at their "Baby Bouncing Balls". I decided to make these, as they are small, quick, help me practice following a pattern (which is the skill in need to improve) and allowed me to use up some odds and ends of wool I had lying around. The beginning was a little fiddly (isn't all crochet beginning a little fiddly?) and then I quickly got the hang of the pattern. I didn't make just one, but 5!! Well we have some babies just born amongst my friends, so these make perfect little additions to their gifts. I love them. I am hooked.

I highly recommend this to any beginner. My only "but" would - with the less complicated patterns - use what would wool you have that roughly corresponds to the pattern - don't worry about buying a whole ball of wool, just to make a little bouncy ball or Jam Jar cover...
