Doesn't get any better than this. Acid Jazz at its best. Average White Band at their best. Top marks all around.

One of AWB albums that did not receive it`s due recognition. Recorded after tragic loss of Robbie M. this album has some real gems. Actually it has a sound that has matured with age - enjoy!

HASH(0x91cfb27c) out of 5 stars Third times a charm........ 16 Sept. 1999

Despite the hard times and tragedy the band suffered ie:(the death of drummer Robbie McIntosh) the band still put out some of their best work. Upon picking up drummer Steve Ferrone the band had once again jelled into one of the tightest groups of the 70,s. Check out (cut the cake) (school boy crush) (groovin the night away) and my favorite cloudy tight album!!!

HASH(0x91cfb2d0) out of 5 stars Get Your Groove On 17 Nov. 2006
By Best Of All - Published on Amazon.com

The Average White Band got it; funk through the intricate charts of a solid horn section and a rhythm through drum and guitar that could go all night long.

In a nod to Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia sound, the Scottish group starts off strong with Cut The Cake and School Boy Crush. Hamish Stuart seems to play with the lyrics on the latter in a style that more than borrows from Curtis Mayfield.

And just maybe because the music was made by musicians - and not through technological gadgets in a studio that so dominates the industry today - it will remain a classic in sound & style. Cut the cake, please; but save me a slice for later!

This album contains 10 tracks, and half of the tracks would definitely appear on one of my playlists. The first track. "Cut The Cake", is a very busy piece of dance music; its drum, bass, and guitar rhythms keep the listener's body moving, and its horn interjections keeps the listener fully engaged in the song's melody. The next track, "Schoolboy Crush", is pure lo-tempo funk. Its sassy lyrics, dominate bass, and relentless guitar elements are a joy for any lover of funk. I also enjoyed the fourth track, "Groovin' the Night Away". This song is in the mode of "Cut The Cake", but with a different melody and faster tempo.

One of the tracks on this album is a cover of Quincy Jones' "If I Ever Lose This Heaven". I enjoyed this song, but it is some-what diminished by its tentative vocals; however, the instrumental elements of the song more than make up for this flaw.

The final track, "When They Bring Down The Curtain" is a very enjoyable ballad with a memorable chorus, I find myself replaying it over and over in my head long after I have heard it.

While the remaining 5 tracks are not nearly as good as the tracks that I have mentioned, they are still very listenable. Overall, I really enjoyed this album.

HASH(0x91cfb864) out of 5 stars Great Old School Funk 2 Dec. 2008
By Gregory A. Marsh - Published on Amazon.com

Just some hot funkin' soul from the mid-70's...dancing tunes to the max and what man doesn't enjoy the "w" in AWB!
My personal fave will always be "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" cause I grew up in a small apartment over a bar and this tune was a staple on the jukebox when it first came out. I used to lay on the floor and funk on down with that song!
Great memories...great, great cd.

This is unique period music, so you have to like this sort of thing. "School Boy Crush" has significant romantic memories attached to it for me, so I have to like this disc. But be warned, this music is definitely of its era, so you have to like its era as well.
