Product Description

In this autobiography Tony Hadley, lead singer of 80s band Spandau Ballet, reveals the highs and lows of his 20-year career in music. At the height of New Romantic fever, classic songs such as "True", "Through the Barricades" and "Gold" earned Hadley, with his good looks and stage presence, a legion of teenage fans around the world. He appeared to have it all, and then he lost it. After a series of bitter rows, Spandau Ballet split. Along with former bandmates John Keeble and Steve Normal, Hadley launched a legal battle against Gary Kemp over royalties - and lost. Professionally his life was in disarray. Personally he was beset by tragedy. His father died. His wife suffered miscarriages. Yet Tony has emerged intact. His fanbase has remained loyal to him through the years - as evidenced by his popularity on "Reborn in the USA", which he won. This book provides a great slice of 80s nostalgia.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Cut a Long Story Short: Tony Hadley is a real star, 11 May 2004
This review is from: To Cut a Long Story Short: My Autobiography (Hardcover)
Tony Hadley is a handsome, intelligent and succesful recording and live artist and when I bought this book I thought I knew what I was buying: the glitz of the Spandau years, the pain of their split and the subsequent court case and a bit of gossip from Tonys 20+years in the music business.......Suffice to say I underestimated this book and most of all the man behind that glossy image.
To Cut A Long Story Short is an incredibly honest piece of writing, at times hilarious and at others almost physically painful to read. Tony lays his life before you with touching frankness: I defy anyone not to be moved by his appalling experiences at school or his fears for the health of his young son: all told to you with a wit and modesty that has left a lasting impression on me. And if anyone really thinks they know what happened when Spandau Ballet split then please read this book and then judge as Tony speaks with great frankness yet without a hint of the bitterness that could have engulfed a lesser man.
To cut a long story short I was moved and impressed by this book and the amazing man who wrote it: Tony Hadley really is a Star in the fullest sense of the word and his story is not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a fan of Mr. Hadley, 8 Feb 2005

Ok Tony Hadley's voice has in the past driven me mad for he has the most beautiful voice EVAH! I didn't really know alot about Spandau Ballet, and living in the US/Chicago it's a wonder I even knew about Spandau Ballet, and I knew even less about Tony Hadley which always made me sad. I found him to be absolutely hilarious, truthful, insightful and sometimes he just broke my heart. I think I'm way more upset about his marriage ending than I am my own! Ok maybe I should distance myself huh? lol Anyways, this is a wonderful book, I read it in a day and my 6 year old son wants to know who the heck Tony Hadley is and why I can't stop listening to him or reading his book, he's rather cross with me. :)
If you want to read a good book about this man this would be money well spent.
I'm done rambling now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, 5 Feb 2005

Anthony O'Doherty (Solihull, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To Cut a Long Story Short: My Autobiography (Hardcover)
I think Tony's book is excellent. Other reviewers have criticised his views on events and other band members. But they are 'his' views. I didn't buy the book to judge anyone. It's a sobering tale for anyone who is thinking of "making it big" in the music industry and believes that this is guaranteed to make their life fantastic. We can all learn from Tony's experiences. Fame and money (or lack of it) aren't everything. It's not what you do in life, it's the way that you do it. I must admit, I was really saddened at the end of the book when Tony revealed that he has split with Leonie. I hope they can try again.
