Possibly like a lot of people of my generation, I really only know of Petula Clark through her 1988 comeback hit the relentlessly swingy and upbeat 'Downtown'. In terms of pop 'hits' this is the first I've heard of her since; but what a return! Cut Copy Me is a nebulous and sparing ode to our technologically-obsessed times, and the various mixes on here just serve to highlight in different ways what a superb composition it is. No Cilla-esque vocal crescendos here, just an understated yet somehow urgent voice, reminding us that it's never time to write-off a true pop music great.

Petula Clark has lasted the course of 71 years in show business, because she has constantly evolved. (Of course it hasn't hurt that she has an immense talent!)

Along the way she has left behind her contemporaries who were stuck in the rut of whatever time they were from. The 40s, the 50s, the 60s etc.

Petula genuinely loves music. All music...well the good stuff anyway. If you ask her who her favourite female "pop" singers are, she might include Peggy Lee and Lena Horne, childhood heroines of hers; she will almost undoubtedly say Dusty Springfield (and she might add a story about the rather odd duet they did after Dusty's death). But she would be likely to add Adele and Aimie.

She has moved with the times, all the time. 40's film starlet, 50s vocalist, 60s pop star and "chanteuse ye ye", 70s Vegas star, 80s and 90s musical comedy star and world-wide concert hall filler, and now... now Petula is back in the recording studio making very up to date 21st century music.

Cut Copy Me is as modern as it name suggests. Hypnotic rhythm, understated track, with deep lyrics, sung by a woman who understands what she is singing. I saw her perform it live on stage during her recent UK tour of one night stands. It brought the house down.

Here there are 5 mixes including the UK original.

Another mix, released on a new French language album, spent many weeks in the chart in Belgium, and the album from which this is taken charted in the UK, some 59 years after her first UK chart entry in 1954.

Petula is in America now, then off to Australia, Singapore and Thailand to tour, then to Montreal and France...

I wonder what her contemporaries from the 60s and 70s are doing...
