I purchased this for my girls who are 9 and 7 years old. The illustrations (back drops for scenes, costumed figures) are detailed and true to "The Nutcracker" theme.
The instructions (backed up by the intricate outlines of figures) tell you that you need to cut them out with an "Exacto-knife" (small "Stanley" knife or similar small blade). -In other words, you cannot really use scissors-
If you use an "exacto-knife", then you need a self-healing cutting board underneath, unless you don't mind your kitchen/dining room table cut up too.
The instructions on the first page are very adequate and tell you that you should glue the pages (of scenes, backdrop, proscenium arches, figures...) first on to some stiff cardboard or similar, so that the finished item is not so flimsy. So far, so good, as it meant that they could make something substantial that would stand up to imaginative play. However, this meant that the aforesaid items are then impossible to cut out with scissors, and thus the cutting blade needs to be used - Not something that I would be happy with young fingers doing, especially unsupervised. So, take note adult buyer - you need to be involved in making this toy theatre!
I made the mistake of thinking that the pieces would have perforations around them, for ease of cutting out, and that the cutting involved would be simple stright line cuts that could be done with blunt ended scissors suitable for children to use. I was wrong.
Even if you don't follow the instructions, and don't use a knife, the figures are really too intricate to use scissors to cut out. And, unless you already have one, you will also need to buy a self-healing cutting mat, precision blade knife and, some decent glue!
