Review

As the cover suggeste, this is an ideas book. It dosen't tell you how to paint a car, though it does give you some useful tips and advice on what's involved. What it does do is assembles a massive amount of glossy custom paint ideas all in one glossy place. There are over 600 colour images of custom paintwork on motorcycles, cars, trucks, and hot rods. You may not necasserilt appreciate all of it but, like going to a car show, it puts a lot of ideas into one place, it's up to you to pick and choose the ones that interest you. It's contemporary enough t include some examples of the current fad for faux patina, but there's lots more examples of airbrushed murals, graphics and wild flame jobs. --Custom Car Magazine, August 2008;...the book also contains the most extensive photo collection of the incredible artwork done by the Legendary Bill Streeter --Cycle Source; The Custom Painting Idea Book by JoAnn Bortles is the most comprehensive guide to custom painting on bookshelves today. With the most complete collection of custom paint photographs ever printed, this book is written for both novices and experts alike and is the must-have companion for vehicle owners looking to custom paint. From hot rods to choppers to pick-up trucks, this book has it all and with nearly 800 beautiful color photos, the possibilities for inspiration and ideas are endless! For vehicle owners with no knowledge of custom painting, this book teaches which style, technique, or scheme will suit the unique demands of the vehicle and budget. Instructional text and imagery about color, design, and how color and design work together are instrumental in building the foundation for this craft. Readers will learn how to choose a good painter for their project, how to communicate with that painter throughout the paint process and what to expect. For experts in the custom painting arena, this book is a tremendously valuable resource. This book also contains artwork from some of the most respected custom painters in the United States. For example, readers can see the most complete published collection of the artwork of Bill Streeter, one of the pioneers of custom motorcycle painting. The average hot rod or custom bike owner is going to spend thousands on their paint but the most worthwhile investment will be The Custom Painting Idea Book. Whether hiring a painter or doing the job yourself--turn to this book for a clear idea of what works and what doesn't. --motorcycle usa dot com;Custom painting offers endless possibilities and choices. Whatever the vehicle - from classic hot rod to pick-up to chopper - a custom paint job sets it apart. But not all paint jobs are created equal, so how can you tell which style, technique, or scheme will suit the unique demands of your vehicle and budget? Before making a big investment - whether you're hiring a painter or doing the job yourself - turn to this book for a clear idea of what works and what dosen't. Drawing on years of experience running her own custom painting shop JoAnne Bortles reviews the full array of options for paints, graphics, and effects. In an easygoing and engaging manner, and with photographs to illustrate her points, she explains the tools and techniques that apply in various paint schemes including both pinstriping & airbrushing and shows what might work especially well in certain situations and for particular vehicles. Whether you're looking for inspiration, considering colour combinations or graphics, or simply wondering what to look for in a local paint shop, this book will answer your questions - and help you get the custom paint job that perfect for you. -- --Pinstriping UK ,Sept 2008

Joann Bortles is a great painter if you've seen her stuff in the magazines. This book has a ton of great info about painting, how to get your concept just right, what to ask your painter. But the best part is that it's filled with photos of custom bikes, cars, and trucks. If you're stuck on where to go with your project, start here.--American Iron--As the cover suggests, this is an ideas book. it dosen't tell you how to paint a car, althoguh it does give some useful tips and advice on what's involved. ...the books American author, JoAnne Bortles, preferrs to concentrate on the bigger picture, describing the principles behind a good colour scheme, for instance, or documenting the vast range of special effects available to the professional custom painter today. Unusually, JoAnne is actually a practising professional herself, and has been for many years. I say 'unusually' because al too often, we'll see books on specialaist subjects like this one having been written by people with zero practicle experienc themselves, and in such cases the cracks always show. The visual side of this 162-page book is a feats of over 750 photos depicting the very best examples of work representing the various schools of design, each one interprited in a unique manner by each individual artist featured. For anyone running short on ideas for a paint scheme, and hour or two perusing these imgaes would be an hour or two very well spent. Petty criticisms of colonial spelling aside, the Custom Painting Idea Book should on the whole prove to be a useful little purchase for anyone planning a half-decent paint job for their bike, as wella s a handy source of inspiration ofr those who make an honest living laying on the laquer. --Back Street heroes magazine, November 2008

Great Ideas 31 Mar 2011
By BOH - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is great for looking at custom paint jobs side by side. It is easy to see which styles you favor when looking at ten different flame jobs on the same page. I am a newby to airbrushing and I like how straight forward the author is. Great eye candy.

Not really what I expected 20 Feb 2012
By rstone89 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought this book would be filled with hints and tips about custom painting vehicles, but its really just a picture book. The first 85 pages are just variations of flames. Then when you get to about page 110 there are some orginal ideas. Overall, not what I expected, but the last 40 pages are very entertaining.
