5.0 out of 5 stars The bind of curving energy, 31 Oct 2006
I wanted to buy a book on the subject of nuclear weapons which would not be to technical but which would at least have technical validity and provide an insight into their use and misuse. This book was spot on. It read very well and was logically laid out. The interviews with the scientists themselves were fascinating.

I particularly liked the way that each subject area was introduced at a basic level and was then built upon to lead the reader to a conclusion. For example the very title and cover of the book provide a remarkably simple and easy to understand outline of where nuclear energy comes from and why energy per mass unit of fuel is so high for fission and fusion power.

When I finished the book I had to go back to the first page to check it had not been written after 9/11. Ted Taylor had almost predicted the 9/11 tragedy years before the event. Although this scientist had worked on some of the most powerful weapons created he maintained a healthy fear of their use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typically brilliant McPhee, 20 Aug 1997
By A Customer
It doesn't matter what McPhee writes about- he's simply the best non-fiction writer of the post-war era. All the best non-fiction writers today- Richard Rhodes comes to mind- owe a debt to the writings of McPhee. He makes literally any subject come alive, and when he has a compelling one like Ted Taylor and nuclear weapons technology and proliferation, the result is compelling, page turning narrative. Buy this book. Buy any John McPhee. You won't be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of date?, 9 Jul 2007
By D. K. Faulds "Busy Engineer" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An interesting book, that jumps back/forward in time. It should scare you about nuclear material and bombs but the information is all from than 30 years ago and it just doesn't apply today - not that we don't have problems but today's are different problems and Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have happened since.
It does give some really interesting technical detail for those with a rudimentary knoweldge of physics. 0 stars for out of date worries 4 stars for tech bits = 2 stars overall.
