5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Guide To Add To Your Library, 18 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Curtains for Beginners (Coats & Clark Seams Sew Easy) (Spiral-bound)
This easy-to-use book offers a variety of window treatment projects that beginning home decor sewers can create while building personal confidence and sewing skills.

Through the use of friendly-toned written instructions, high-quality diagrams, color photographs, and visually appealing page layouts, each step of the process is clearly explained and demonstrated.

Instructions are enhanced by sidebar boxes containing special tips and quick-reference information relevant to the main topic. Certain techniques or special words mentioned in the body of the instructions are followed by a page number in reference to where the topic is discussed in detail. Bolded words in all capital letters can be found in the glossary, and an index further assists in locating information.

The authors emphasize the importance of first becoming comfortable with your sewing machine, common machine accessories, and basic sewing room supplies. Guidelines about setting up the machine and troubleshooting typical problems are presented in a matter of fact manner appropriate for either the true beginner, or anyone needing a refresher course.

This book provides detailed information regarding fabric selection. Topics include choosing the best fabric to achieve a particular decorator look, light control and privacy considerations, and caring for the finished window treatment. Expert advise is offered on why selecting high-quality fabrics will result in a better finished product, along with tips on determining the quality of a fabric before purchasing.

Mini-chapters discuss choosing and installing window treatment hardware. A variety of curtain rods, brackets, anchors, and bolts are pictured along with the simple tools needed for installation. Very detailed diagrams and charts are included to show how to correctly measure any window for any type of treatment and mounting technique.

The last two-thirds of the book is devoted to the actual sewing projects. Each section begins with "What You'll Learn" and "What You'll Need" lists. This type of organization helps the reader measure success as well as prepare for the project that follows. Each project builds on skills previously learned.

The authors promise that all of the projects in the book are easy to sew and install, and continue to offer upbeat you-can-do-it words of encouragement all the way to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, 3 April 2001
By Christine "loves to read" - Published on Amazon.com

Beginners should be VERY encouraged after purchasing this book. The directions are written in plain english and the photographs are terrific step-by-step guides. Every project was presented in an easy-to-learn fashion, and they tell you exactly what you'll learn and what you'll need. A must for anyone who wants to learn and is frustrated by the lack of true beginner sewing books.

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best beginners' reference I've found, 2 May 2005
By Jan Bednarczuk - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Curtains for Beginners (Coats & Clark Seams Sew Easy) (Spiral-bound)
I took a beginners' sewing class that taught me the basics of sewing, and as my first solo project, I decided to make curtains for my living room and kitchen. I got practically every book that the library had on the topic of curtain-making, and I can tell you that this was the best one for an extreme novice.

The authors make very few assumptions about the reader's sewing ability. They expect that you know how to operate a sewing machine, that you know what a seam is, and that's just about it. Everything else is explained in easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. And, they cover a variety of different treatments, which is nice if you want to do something simple that doesn't just involve flat sheets of fabric hanging from your curtain rod.

I decided finally to buy this one, because I wound up checking it out from the library so often. Definitely worthwhile for any beginner sewer who wants to make curtains.
