Amazon.co.uk Review

As they point out themselves on Cursed With Insincerity, Black Country Britpop precursors The Wonder Stuff were certainly never in vogue. "Because we no longer have to sell records or get on the front cover of the music papers, we don't have to pretend to be cool anymore", grins Miles Hunt to a huge roar of approval. But to see groups like Blur and Supergrass make a fortune on what was, essentially, a more savvy version of their melodic guitar-pop blueprint clearly irked, because in December 2000--after six-and-a-half years in the wilderness--they decided to do it all over again. Live double album Cursed With Insincerity captures the last night of five sold-out gigs at The Forum in London and cocking an ear, it's certainly not hard to see why their fan base has remained intact: "Unbearable", "Welcome To The Cheap Seats" and "On The Ropes" are three-minute distillations of luridly obvious pop simplicity, with Hunt's accessible lyrical foibles--wry sarcasm and misty-eyed sentimentality--on sharp form. If you can, to this day, stomach the maddeningly jaunty "Size Of A Cow", then this slice of early 90s nostalgia should be an essential guilty pleasure. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars The Stuffies are back!!!, 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cursed With Insincerity (Audio CD)
Early last summer the announcement was made that legendary brummie Gods The Woner Stuff would be making a return to the live circuit for a brief series of gigs in December, and here is the result of a summer of anticipation.

This CD is everything that a stuffies fan could possibly want from a live CD. Forget the sanatised cleaned up Live In Manchester that was released a few years back, this is the stuffies doing it like they mean it, kicking ass big style with huuuuge grins on their (albeit slighty older and fatter) faces.

Two mighty cd's, what a bargin. However I digress.

The songs on here you will no doubt already know and love, Ten Trenches Deep, It's Yer Money, Give, Give, Give Me More, More, More.... A Wish Away, and too many more to mention that will just get you dancing round wherever it is that you are listening to this cd. But it's not just the fact that it's THOSE songs played by THAT band that make this CD such a crushingly essential purchase, it's the whole performance, Milo's between song banter, the feeling of those "Hup, hup, hup, hup!!"'s that make you realise what made this band so god damn special in the first place.

If you went to any of the gigs at JB's or The Forum last december then try and listen to this CD without the hairs on the back of yoyr neck standing up, IT CAN'T BE DONE!!!!

One of the many, many highlights of thsi CD has to be the "And if she loves me..." refrain in Golden Green where Milo momentarily lets the crowd take over before interrupting with a brief "Do you Mind?"

I need this band to exist, so do you and so does the entire world, they make life worth living, and give it a damn good soundtrack.

If you went in December then this is the perfect memento, if you ever saw them then it's a great reminder, if you've never seen them then this CD will make you get off your backside and go to see them in August.

I could waffle on for ages about Malcs stunning riffery, Gilseys drum prowess or the true Godliness of a certain Mr Martin Bell, but I won't. All I fell that I need to say is BUY THIS CD!!! You will not regret it.

Oh, and it is extremly attractivley packaged, a fold out cardboard sleeve with booklet featuring sleeve notes by Milo. Mmmmmm. Fiddley, take it away!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Man Who Provided The Beat - Cheers Mate., 21 April 2006

I've just read on the Room 512 message boards that Martin Gilks, Wonder Stuff drummer, has been killed in a motorcycle accident - and it's left me choked.

This is a BRILLIANT live album. Genuinely essential, and the best place to start a Wonder Stuff collection. In many ways, Its recorded a few years after the event (a re-union get-together 6 years after they called it quits at the Phoenix festival), but the magic that took over when they took the stage is captured brilliantly on this (seemingly budget!) double disc set.

All the favourites are here. Maybe there's a couple missing - but when you listen, you'll be more pleased at what you get than what could've been (Dizzy springs to mind as an notable absentee).

At time of writing, I'm 37 years old. From the late 80s thru to the mid 90s, I saw 100s of bands, many of the best ones on numerous occasions. New Order, PWEI, Prodigy, Pixies spring to mind as being genuinely great, but the Wonder Stuff are the only band I've seen 3 nights running. They were responsible for some of the most glorious nights of my life.

God bless Gilksy - you were the man. X

5.0 out of 5 stars Give give give me more more more, 15 Sep 2005
This review is from: Cursed With Insincerity (Audio CD)
I only managed to see the Stuffies live once in the good old days. They were always a quality live act and this cd won't disappoint fans and nostalgists. Miles' voice remains strong and his few expletives show he's still an angry young man at heart. Ahh, Bless. The only down side to the Stuffies re-forming was the album "Escape from Rubbish Island," which was utter rubbish. There's more than one or two gems on this double delight though so Buy it now!
