Review

a beguiling author who interweaves past and present. Like its predecessor . . . The book works well on both levels, detective fiction with a historical twist . . . Fans will love it., moody mystery. . . A splendid piece of whodunnit, and when?, a satisfying and enjoyable read

Product Description

The brutal massacre of the Harford family at Potwoolstan Hall in Devon in 1985 shocked the country and passed into local folklore. And when a journalist researching the case is murdered twenty years later, the horror is reawakened. Sixteenth century Potwoolstan Hall, now a New Age healing centre, is reputed to be cursed because of the crimes of its builder, and it seems that inheritance of evil lives on as DI Wesley Peterson is faced with his most disturbing case yet. As more people die violently, Wesley needs to discover why a young woman has transformed a dolls house into a miniature reconstruction of the massacre scene. And could the solution to his case lie across the Atlantic Ocean, in the ruined remains of an early English settlement in Virginia USA? When the truth is finally revealed, it turns out to be as horrifying as it is dangerous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved another excellent book by Kate Ellis, 27 April 2010
This review is from: A Cursed Inheritance (Wesley Peterson Series) (Paperback)
Kate Ellis combines my love of archeology and murder mysteries. She writes with such flair. It never takes long before 'I'm sucked in' with old friends and I can't put it down and then suddenly it's two in the morning! Looking forward to the nexte one. I suppose my only nagging annoyance is Pam, why doesn't she get a grip?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story, 12 Sep 2011

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Neil Watson is off on an archaeological trip to America and his grandmother has asked him to see if he can find her wartime sweetheart. Wesley Peterson and his wife Pam are struggling with domesticity and the demands of their jobs. An author is found dead on a visit to the area where he is researching into a multiple murder which happened twelve years ago.

Was he killed because he was getting too close to the truth? Wesley and his boss Gerry Heffernan suddenly find they have more than enough work to keep them busy with things such as a spate of thefts at places which hold study courses for adults as well as the murder. Of course this is not the first murder they will have to investigate before they finally work out the truth.

This is quite a dark story both in regards to the modern murders and the archaeological investigation of the early settlers in the USA. There are also disturbing tensions surfacing between Wesley and Pam now that they have two children and the bulk of the childcare falls on Pam even though she has a full time job. Relationships between the police characters are not at their best either with Steve Carstairs finding himself in a sticky situation and Rachel struggling to control her feeling for Wesley.

This is an interesting story with many layers and nuances. The characters are developing well and are believable. The interaction between the historical mystery and the present day ones are well done and fir together well. I recommend this series to anyone who likes their crime stories to be a little different.

I enjoyed the interweaving of the two main tales, and I will definitely be reading more of Kate Ellis's work - her writing is crisp, and her characters are very human
