4.0 out of 5 stars "Fallen Siren" series book 1 10 Jan 2014
By Book Addict TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When she and her 2 sisters failed to stop Hades kidnapping Persephone, the goddess Demeter cursed them; ejecting them from Mount Olympus until they find salvation. For thousands of years Ligea has suppressed her seductive Siren powers; minimising her beauty and only using her powers sparingly in case her actions draw the wrath of Demeter. Over the centuries she has learnt that falling in love is dangerous; Demeter happily taking the life of any man she develops feelings for.

In the modern world Ligea is now FBI agent Emma Monroe; still hoping to atone for her sins by hunting down and saving missing people. Unfortunately her new partner is none other than Zack Armstrong. Not only does she know he's a werewolf, Emma also has a history with him; indulging in one night of red hot sex with the understanding there would be no future interaction between them.

Now Emma has to face Zack daily, and the feelings she's tried to suppress are getting stronger. Yet with Demeter still on the scene, Emma risks Zack's life if she falls in love with him. As she fights her feelings, the pair work on a missing person case that escalates into something far more sinister.

This author does a good job of weaving together Greek mythology with the supernatural; although I would have liked a little more of Emma's vast history worked into the story line. The sexual tension between Emma and Zack is explosive, and remains heated throughout even as their investigation adds twists and turns to the plot and leads them deeper into the supernatural world. Demeter only makes a brief appearance but it is impact and I can fully appreciate Emma's reluctance to fall in love when she has an angry Goddess on her heels. There's still plenty of scope for Emma's adventures; particularly with the introduction of a certain vampire, but I do hope her sisters are introduced soon and their own stories revealed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fallen Siren book 1 18 Oct 2013
By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Emma is an immortal siren, cursed by the Goddess Demeter for failing to protect Persephone from Hades, she is forced to remain on earth until she has atoned for her sin. Emma must protect the innocent to redeem herself and she is forbidden from finding love and happiness until Demeter agrees that she has suffered enough. Zack has just transferred to Emma's FBI office and become her new partner, Emma knows that Zack is a werewolf but he has no idea that she is even aware of the supernatural community, let alone that she isn't human. Their latest investigation starts out as a simple missing person case but soon becomes a whole lot more complicated when they uncover more victims and realise that none of them were quite what they seemed. Working so closely together makes it very difficult for them to keep their secrets, especially when their case drags them deep into the supernatural community, but can they trust each other enough to share the full truth?

S.J. Harper is the pen name of the two authors Samantha Sommersby and Jeanne C. Stein, I hadn't actually read works by either of these authors before but having really enjoyed their collaboration I'll definitely be checking out some of their individual works in the future. Cursed is a great start to a new urban fantasy series and I'm already looking forward to getting my hands on the next book. I really liked both of the main characters and I enjoyed learning about the world the authors have created. The mystery was solid and kept my interest throughout and I hadn't guessed the who or why until quite near the end of the story.

S.J. Harper is the pen name for the writing team of authors Jeanne C. Stein and Samantha Sommersby. I've read the Anna Strong series by Jeanne C. Stein and it is fantastic but I've never read Samantha Sommersby.

Emma Moore is an FBI agent. She is also a Siren who has been bound to Earth by the Greek Goddess Demeter where Emma has to redeem herself by saving others from peril. Emma cannot fall in love, die or leave Earth until Demeter is happy that Emma has atoned for her sins by letting Demeter's daughter Persephone get abducted by Hades.

Zack Armstrong is a werewolf who worked a case with Emma some time ago. He has now moved to San Diego to be Emma's full time partner. Emma knows that Zack is a werewolf but he has no idea that she knows or that she is not human herself. Zack has joined just at the right time as a new missing person's case has turned up on their desks.

I haven't read a lot of Urban Fantasy this year and this book has whetted my appetite for it again. Cursed is a good old fashioned classic UF and it was awesome. There are great characters and I really liked our main protagonists however I am very intrigued to learn more about one vampire you will come across in this. The world building is really good and it was nice to read about a Siren and S. J. Harper's take on this.

The pacing was spot on and I enjoyed the plot, although I did work out the who, the what and the why. It was the ending that made this book for me and I am desperate for the next book to be out. Cursed is an excellent first book in the series and I have high hopes for this one. I highly recommend to all UF fans and I am giving Cursed 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for more 6 Oct 2013
By Reader79 - Published on Amazon.com

Cursed is a new addition to the urban fantasy lexicon written by the author duo: Jeanne C. Stein and Samantha Sommersby. I am a fan of Stein's Anna Strong vampire series so I was looking forward to her latest work. I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as the Anna Strong stories; the book felt amateurish in places and the story lacked a certain amount of excitement that usually keeps me flipping the pages in my favorite urban fantasy reads.

The book begins with an initial information dump that I have found in a lot of unedited independent reads. In the first five to ten pages the reader learns: the assumed hero is a werewolf, the heroine, Emma, is a siren cursed by Demeter to stay on earth and find missing people. We also learn that the two main characters have an intimate history, we learn that Emma's best friend is a witch (who happens to be dating a vampire), we learn that our intrepid main characters work for the FBI and lastly we learn the details of the missing persons case that will drive the story. All of this, and more, is given to us in chapter one.

The most significant element that felt amateurish to me was the depiction of Emma Munroe. She reads like the standard twenty-something urban fantasy heroine - except she is supposed to be centuries old. I never felt that her character had anything ancient about her. Most ancient male characters in fiction have great power, wisdom, fortune, etc. Emma truly seems to have just bumbled around for centuries upon centuries hoping that if she saves enough people Demeter will remove her curse. The authors never explain why she works for the FBI--why would she want to be hampered by rules and regulations if her only goal is to save people, not prosecute criminals? She is supposedly not to use her powers very much, but she does it all of the time. She is irresponsible in her development of personal relationships. She is essentially everything I would expect from an inexperienced young woman just learning the ropes, but not an ancient woman with hundreds of lifetimes worth of experiences.

In all fairness I finished the book and I was interested to see how it would end. I felt that Emma redeemed herself in the last chapter which bolstered my opinion of the book from two stars to three. If there is another installment of this series I will not read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars I think any Urban Fantasy Fan will enjoy CURSED and I will picking up book 2 when it comes out. 1 Oct 2013
By Urban Fantasy Investigations - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Emma is a very very old Siren. She has walked the earth cursed by the Goddess Demeter for failing to her daughter Persephone. She is not allowed to love a man or he will die at the Goddess' hands and she must save woman until Demeter considers her debt paid.

Emma is an agent with the FBI. Being a Siren lets her solve missing person cases faster but of course nobody knows that. She worked with Zack on an out-of-state case in the past. She knew he was a werewolf right away, they got very close and she made it clear that she did not want a relationship with him. She thought about him often but thankfully he was states away. That is until he shows up as her new partner. No matter how much she tries to keep their relationship professional it just is not happening. They have electric chemistry and are drawn to each other. This is strictly because I am a romantic at heart but I was disappointed with the ending events. *sad face* Just not fair. I know the events will be revisited and it's not anywhere near over but Demeter is a uber biatch and I want to punch her. Sorry, books make me violent.

I enjoyed the case they worked on together. The case came together at a nice pace and the paranormal elements of the missing made it even better when all was revealed. Emma's best friend was a great supporting character that I know will continue to be a breath of fresh air in the middle of any disaster that is thrown Emma's way. There is a bit of Greek Mythology going on but not as much as I thought there would be so I am interested in seeing if the authors will dive into that more. I think any Urban Fantasy Fan will enjoy CURSED and I will picking up book 2 when it comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars 1 Oct 2013
By Kimberly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Emma Monroe is cursed - literally. Centuries ago, she was stripped of her wings and bound to Earth for her failure in rescuing Persephone from Hades. Any man she falls in love with is doomed to die at the hands of the goddess Demeter. Now Emma's an agent for the FBI, hiding her true nature as a siren while working toward redemption by finding missing persons. Her latest case involves a missing artist who may be more than she seems, but that isn't what's throwing Emma for a loop.

Emma's new partner, Zack Armstrong, is an agent with supernatural secrets of his own. Zack's a werewolf whose past has him searching for salvation as well. The pull between he and Emma is undeniably strong...not to mention dangerous. When their case takes an unexpected turn, both Zack and Emma are left vulnerable by their growing connection. And to save the victims and each other, both werewolf and siren might have to sacrifice the unimaginable.

Cursed is a paranormal adventure worthy of the name. With Cursed, S. J. Harper has delivered a dynamite beginning to the Fallen Siren series.

Zack and Emma have the kind of chemistry that can't be beat. Though Cursed is written entirely from Emma's point of view, she and Zack are equally strong leads and I can't wait to delve deeper into their characters in future books. Their easy working relationship contrasts perfectly with the troubles of their burgeoning romantic relationship. Regarding the latter, S. J. Harper throws some surprising curveballs in their path, one of which literally had my jaw dropping.

Relationships aside, the world building of Cursed should delight any Urban Fantasy fan. The twist on the sirens of Greek mythology, combined with the intriguing glimpses into this world's vampire and werewolf mythos, have me begging for more Fallen Siren novels. Though I won't spoil what I learned (that would ruin much of the fun of the novel), suffice it to say that S. J. Harper does a fantastic job of introducing a marvelous world without going overboard and slowing down the story.

An intriguing mystery and a host of fascinating secondary characters round out Cursed, making the book impossible to put down. I admit, I have a love/hate relationship with the ending of this story. There's a punch-you-in-the-gut cliffhanger for anyone attached to Emma and Zack, but it's organic to the story and ensures that I'll definitely be picking up the next Fallen Siren book.

Cursed is a wickedly sirenic story that will have you reading late into the night. Authors Samantha Sommersby and Jeanne C. Stein (the writing team that is S. J. Harper) have created something wonderful with the Fallen Siren series and I can't wait to see where they take readers next!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what i was expecting- in a bad way 24 Nov 2013
By Jasmine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was very excited when I found this because it came recommended to those who like Sookie Stackhouse and Anita Blake novels. But this does not compare. Not even by a long shot. I liked the beginning, because I really loved how she was unlike any other supernatural and she was so rare and unheard of and I also really liked the love interest and that he was a werewolf. But that's about where it stops being interesting. She supposedly has all of these awesome powers but we only get to see a tiny bit of them. It got really boring after the half-way point and I honestly just skimmed to the end. Not what I expected. Not what I wanted. Wouldn't recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Mystery, the FBI, and the HOT Supernaturals! 17 Oct 2013
By Dii - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
People are going missing and the FBI is on the case, everyone is suspect and evil is afoot. Sounds like a good premise for another mystery, right? Add an ancient siren, cursed to be alone forever all because of one horrible family mistake and a hot, awesome and MAYBE just a little alpha-ish werewolf loner and you have as near to book nirvana as us mere mortal humans can get! That they already have a history that neither has quite gotten over is just a plus, a big plus, so big it took two authors combining their creative talent to dream up Cursed by S. J. Harper, the first in the new Fallen Siren Series!

Emma Monroe seeks redemption from an angry goddess, while Zack Armstrong is determined to atone for a past that cost the lives of many, by using his future to save lives, each hiding their true identity from the world. Their attraction is so obvious, their dedication to doing the right thing no matter what the cost is admirable and in Emma’s case, sadly heartbreaking. Can these two work together without entangling their hearts?

The S.J. Harper team is the dynamic duo of creative writing with witty dialogue, banter and tension, an ingenious plot that involves science, blackmail and the supernatural and an ending that leaves me wanting more Emma, more Zack and…just plain MORE! Did you two hear me? I want more!

Lucky me! I received this review copy as part of the Cursed Book Blast Tour and Giveaway coming to Tome Tender October 31,
