Product Description

London Sunday Telegraph, August 24, 2008

"Freeman's light tone darkens as the violence in Baghdad escalates; he communicates his experiences in a refreshingly unmacho way."

Review

Hugely entertaining and honest... neither a macho 'seen it all before' war correspondent memoir, nor an angst-ridden self-flaggellation.

5.0 out of 5 stars How it actually was, 1 Sep 2008
By Oliver Poole - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was a reporter in Baghdad while Colin was in Iraq and as such can say that this book captures exactly what it was like to be there. This is no mean feat - too many books on Iraq try to interpret it through policy decisions made in Washington and London or via the military operations conducted. To us who were in Baghdad, the chaos and anarchy on the ground made such initiatives seem not only irrelevant but farcical. What Colin's book does is capture - with a sharpness that I have read nowhere else - the confusion that marked the first years after Saddam Hussein's fall. It is also extremely funny, which is appropriate as it was the comedy of errors that marked those years that was to herald the tragedy for Iraq that followed. A highly recommended read for anyone who wants to know what it was like to be there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 17 Dec 2008
By R. Morris (Cambridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Colin comes across as very human in this book and it was so refreshing to read about someone going into the venture completely blind & therefore being understandably terrified. Reading about Colin's survival training in Streatham was sterling entertainment.

The humour is self-deprecating and can be pretty cynical at times which personally I appreciated; it comes across as extremely honest. The day to day nuts & bolts aspect of the story was fascinating - it's fascinating to read the grubby details about how he actually coped on a daily basis.

The book features some intriguing characters and upon finishing I yearned to know more about their stories. Mohammed was of particular interest - given the circumstances we'll never know what he got up to in the past but it pushed my imagination into overdrive! The whole Ultra Services affair - a story which Colin stumbles across during his journey - could easily warrant a book of it's own. At least it would were it possible to establish any further details through the fog of war. After finishing the book I immediately online to check out Colin's SFC articles to read more. Fascinating stuff.

A well written, honest, funny, enjoyable read - very impressed with this one.

This book is a fascinating and engaging account of journalism in action. I could not put it down - at times it is laugh out loud funny. It is also informative and hugely entertaining - a must read for my team.
