About the Artist
Sarah Gillespie was born in London to an American mother and British father. She grew up in Norfolk, England interspersed with numerous trips to Minnesota, where she soaked in the sounds of Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter and early blues and jazz. From the age of 4, Sarah composed songs on piano, and then at 15 began playing guitar. At 18, she moved to the USA, busking in the streets and playing gigs. On returning to London, she gained a first class degree in Film And Literature and an MA in Politics And Philosophy from Goldsmiths University. Supporting Ian Dury s band The Blockheads at Ronnie Scotts one night, Sarah met the saxophonist and composer Gilad Atzmon and Gilad went on to produce Sarah s critically acclaimed debut album Stalking Juliet (Egea). Sarah has since performed live on BBC Radio 4 s Woman s Hour, played festivals, jazz clubs, venues and Arts Centers across Britain and toured in Europe. Described by Rock n'Reel as a bracingly eclectic mix of Beat poetry with jazz, folk and Middle Eastern elements Sarah s music is a sonic reflection of the contemporary London street, a melting-pot mix of urban-folk stamped with her trademark lyricism that knits everyday banter with raw poetry. Sarah s quartet features Gilad Atzmon on accordion, clarinet and sax, Enzo Zirilli on drums and Ben Bastin on double bass. The band have just completed a new album In the Current Climate which will be released in January 2011. Sarah also writes occasional political papers published on various news websites and regularly organises fundraising concerts. She also paints, writes poetry and hosts songwriting workshops. She lives in London.

Just bought the latest Gillespie/Atzmon CD from the appropriately named Albion Beatnik bookshop in Jericho, Oxford. Sarah's second album is another generous ladle-full of beat-pop, gypsy jazz (and whatever), from-the belt-singing. Echoes of Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin, even Joan Baez. Lyrics for the literate and a musical cadence of jazz, middle eastern and folk that stream together like rushing musical currents. Excellent production, rawer and more intimate than her first.Listening to it now, the song that stands out for me most is How the West Was Won. Reminds me of the best of Dylan. The lyrics alone are a powerful indictment of western imperial play in the ME from Guantanomo, torture, rendition and occupation; powerful words for a status quo that won't just fade away. Very highly recommended.

Sassy Sophistikat !,

I went to see her recently at an obscure small venue- 'The Mad Ferret', Preston - as a friend had recommended this band. I'd heard Gilad Atzmon's playing on the radio and knew that at least I would be sure to enjoy his eloquent reeds. I did - but was not as prepared to be so instantly impressed by the sophisticated, genre-defying, vocal compass of Sarah Gillespie! Not only that, her words are written and delivered in a manner which is wholly persuasive, intriguing, inveigling. An elusive lyricism.This hard-working band deserves the professional exposure of say .. 'The Jools Holland Show'. But whilst they are still accessible and playing intimate venues - go see them - you wont be disappointed! Her CDs also contain all her lyrics - worthy of publication as poetry.

Completely Unexpected,

Me and the wife went to the local pub in Glossop (The Globe) and saw that the Sarah Gillespie Trio was playing. Never heard of them before, but we thought it was worth £8 to go and see a band. They were fantastic, they were quite musically complex compared to your usual chart fare, but very accessible. We're not musos (last thing we went to see was "We Will Rock You" musical !), but thoroughly enjoyed the gig (what's with the tables and chairs though ? - I wanted to get up and dance) Afterwards they were selling the CDs, I bought all three (the 2 Sarah Gillespie CDs which she signed for us, and the Gilad Atzmon CD). I can't stop playing "In the Current Climate", all the tracks are very strong and they mostly avoid any whimsy or self indulgence - all that musical talent blends together for the sake of the song, not to individually showcase their undoubted incredible musicianship. Lyrically it's a mix of political and personal themes, overall it's really hard to pick a favourite but "How the West was Won" and "I Forget To Get Off Trains" make me cry every time I hear them (for different reasons)
