Amy Macdonald has fast become one of my favourite musicians, I bought her first album on a bit of a gamble not knowing if I would like it or not, and since then I've always looked forward to listening to any of her music. There's something about Amy's style that really appeals to me, it's not the catchy rhythms or the lyrics, it's that sense of home and belonging, and Amy's love for her Scottish roots really got me thinking about my own.
A Curious Thing is Amy's second studio album, and like her first is excellent. There's always that danger of a second album not being as good as the first, but this album is even better. Amy has kept to her style which I really like, she just picks up her guitar and sings, there's nothing flashy or commercially-produced about it, which nowadays is nice to see.
My favourite song from the album is Spark, and is probably my favourite of Amy's songs to date (Run from the first album being my previous favourite). My other favourites from the album include Don't Tell Me That It's Over, An Ordinary Life, Give It All Up and Your Time Will Come - all of them deserve a mention though!
With this edition of the album you get a bonus Special Orchestral CD, recorded at the Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg. Funnily enough I'd actually seen some videos of this performance before buying the album so I was really pleased to see it in a CD format. My one complaint is that it does not contain Run from the performance - anyone who's seen videos of it will know what a mistake it was not to include it on the CD.
= So in all, an even better album than the first, which was also excellent. The orchestral CD just shows you Amy's talent outside of the studio. Existing and new fans will love this album, and I hope both buy it, enjoy!
