Product Description

Product Description

Sandwiched between County Durham and Northumberland, Tyneside is one of the most heavily industrialised regions of Britain, encompassing Newcastle and Gateshead. Massive investment in the area has resulted in a fast-changing landscape, with developments such as the Sage in Gateshead attracting international attention. In his new book, Robert Woodhouse, one of the north-east's best-known historians, guides us to over 100 remarkable and curious sights to be found on Tyneside, spanning centuries of history from Roman times right up to the present day. Many of these fascinating relics of the past are overlooked by residents and visitors alike, but the inclusion in this book of location and access details, as well as numerous illustrations, means that readers can easily discover an immense variety of history, humanity and architecture for themselves.

About the Author

Robert Woodhouse began researching the history of north-east England in the 1960s. He has twenty-four books on the area to his credit, for nine different publishers (including SPL's Northumberland - Strange but True and County Durham - Strange but True), and makes regular contributions to local radio and in newspapers - including a weekly walks column in the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, which has appeared since 1991. Well known for his local history summer schools, adult education classes and annual lecture programme, Robert is one of the north-east's foremost historians.
