My mother, who died in 1985, was riddled with rheumatoid arthritis and now my sisters, both older than me, have it and suffer such a lot of pain. I was hoping that perhaps it would skip me - but as time has gone on (I'm 55) I began to feel depressingly aware that, despite my efforts to have a good diet and avoid certain foods and keep a positive attitude, I had begun to feel the tell-tale signs of stiffness and some pain - not excruciating like my sisters - but enough to make me feel fairly depressed about it.

However, my approach has always been to attempt to avoid this dreadful disease without resorting to drugs as it is quite clear from my sisters that they do not work long term and have caused so many side effects that I find it incredible that they still put so much faith in 'modern medicine'.

Margaret Hills' book just seemed to jump out at me when I was browsing on Amazon looking for books related to arthritis - like many people, I was rather sceptical - but there is something about this book that is quite enchanting - it is sooo 'not in your face' - does not 'shout out at you' = does not require you you spend a fortune on wacky foods - it is just so simple and written with such dignity and humility - reading it is almost a spiritual experience in itself.

Although I couldn't claim to have been in agonising pain before I started this diet - this was what I hoped to avoid - I was beginning to find things like getting out of bed in the morning quite difficult and painful - eg I had to walk around like a chimpanzee for a minute or so before straightening up and after driving for a while, getting out of the car was rather painful. Well - after about six weeks I now find that I just literally 'get out of bed' and after driving for 2 hours last week I just literally 'got out of the car' without walking 'like a chimp'. My husband, who had adopted a rather 'sceptical' attitude - has been pleasantly surprised and supportive - in fact the other day he (sheepishly - don't know why - perhaps it's a man thing!) asked me where the vinegar was.

I have sent this book to one of my sisters who is in so much pain that she will try anything - and I am confident that if she follows it, she will find some releif. My other sister is convinced that the medical profession would know all about this if it worked! So we'll see.

I would recommend this lovely book to anyone.

I used to run three or four miles daily. One day, jogging happily along a woodland path, a searing pain in my left hip stopped my in my tracks. I limped home. After enduring a solid, grinding pain for some weeks in my hip it was plain this time my body could not repair itself. Whatever I had done was not going to get better.

An Xray confirmed my doctor's diagnosis of arthritis of the hip. "Take these pain killers", he said. "When they don't work any longer we will give you an artificial joint".

Deeply shocked, and before returning home, I visited my nearest bookstore. Margaret Hills paperback "Curing Artiritis the drug free way" jumped off the shelf at me. I read it from cover to cover then started to implement her teachings. Four years laterer, my hip is pain free, my lifetime back trouble but a memory, and increasingly bad tinnitus has subsided. I still have the original painkillers prescribed, unused.

Everyone over age 25 should understand the teachings of this book. If the medical profession studied the effects of food with the reverence they accorded drugs, untold misery and millions in unnecessary hospital expenses would be saved.

The effects of eating certain popular foods regularly can be devastating. Tobacco is a killer, the label on the packet says so. Where is the label warning of crippling arthritis on the tomato sauce, the baked beans in tomato sauce, the spaghetti in tomato sauce, the pasta in...., etc.Regular concentrated orange juice, sultanas, plumbs, wine etc. all artificially high in acid can cause chaos to our bodies. Margaret Hills' book explains what happens and why. She can also be contacted at Coventry to clarify any points not understood. Details in the book will reverse the ravages of excess bad foods paraded as 'good for you'. Her advice can restore your mobility, remove your pain and allow you to live once again. But it. Read it. Then Act upon it!

I gave my mum this book for Christmas 2000 and she started the diet in January 2001, giving herself "six months to see if it makes any difference". She followed the guidelines rigidly and by the summer she was like a different woman. She can get in and out of chairs without crying out in pain and has even chased me around the kitchen table when I've been cheeky!
She has found the diet restrictive, particularly in the summer when she was denied quite a lot of fruits and tomatoes, but she says it's definitely worth it. It has made such a difference to her quality of life I can't believe that doctors don't recommend that arthritis sufferers try this diet. Every day she has to take a mixture of ingredients including cider vinegar - her last blood test at the GP rated her blood as "perfect" and she believes that it's the vinegar that's responsible for that.
All in all, a fantastic purchase. Anybody with arthritis should try this and see the splendid results.
