Product Description

What would the pharmaceutical industry do if an inexpensive plant could be grown that was going to put them out of business?
A Cure To Die For is about a wonder drug, a miracle cure and a conspiracy to destroy it; about a genetically engineered cure for the common cold that turns out to be a cure for cancer.
A crisis of medical and corporate greed sweeps the country. The government and the media conspire with Big Pharma to keep a miracle drug off the market.
Amid harrowing kidnappings, manhunts, political and corporate intrigue, Wall Street corruption, drug addiction, suicides, arrests and terrifying escapes—in the Montana wilderness, in the high-tech world of Houston, Texas, in the political cesspool of Washington D.C., and on a 26,000 square mile Indian reservation—a man and a woman fight to survive a perilous journey where the fate of a healthy planet hinges on the survival of a tiny seed.
A Cure To Die For is a medical thriller that is part adventure, part mystery and part love story; a novel about two people who stand against a broken world.

The hero & heroine in this story are Alex Farmer and Cyd Seeley. Cyd is the research assistant to Maury Bernstein, a childhood friend of Alex. Maury is murdered after discovering a hybrid plant 'Cannastar' which is able to cure everything from the common cold to terminal cancer.

As the story progresses, religion is drawn into the mix, drug dealers are the nice guys, politicians, the media and pharmaceutical companies are among the baddies, romance blossoms everywhere.........and so it goes on!

It is very difficult to come up with new storylines for medical thrillers/conspiracies that will captivate readers. I thought this story started out really well and felt I was in for an enjoyable read. However, once I reached less than half way through, I did struggle with it. I would even go as far as saying I was rapidly becoming bored by it!

One of the reasons could be the author's tendency for going over the top when listing items. For instance, just one example of this is the paragraph that reads:
"Trucks were coming up the hill from all directions - Fords, Chevys, Dodges, GMCs, Toyotas, Nissans, Hummers, Mazdas and Suzukis of every size, age, color and description, turbo chargers screaming, tires throwing mud and gravel. The entire house was suddenly surrounded by a circular wall of pickups. Four hundred guns dismounted, leaping from the trucks with whoops and shouts as they stormed the house. They wore boots and jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy shirts, sports jerseys and baseball caps, but the effect was no less fearsome had it been war paint and feathers; this was one scary bunch."

One of the characters is described as having a "knack for storytelling. With impeccable timing and appropriate dramatic pauses, he was offering a lengthy rendition of ........"

Unfortunately, despite getting off to such a good start, by the end of the book I didn't feel the author shared the same knack as this character and the later part of the story felt as if it disintegrated into cynical ranting and just became a lengthy rendition.

Formatting on the Kindle was pretty good - I picked up a fairly large handful of typos but not sufficient to detract from the storyline and I have come across many which are far worse for this.

I couldn't wait to get to the end of this book - unfortunately not because I found it gripping but simply because it became more and more tedious, unconvincing and implausible towards the end.

My biggest mistake with this book was reading Amazon reviews which, in my opinion, were rude, false and unnecessary. It gave me a false impression of a poorly written book with a slow story, long lists and awful flashbacks which immediately put me in a state of mind of `I won't like this'. Mr Mitchell can certainly tell a story with a wild and open imagination and tells it with such passion. You can almost hear him getting giddy with excitement as you read on.

The first part of the story which sets the scene of who the characters are and what is their relationship to each other travels at an easy page turning pace with the main or vital character, Maury, having been murdered. Maury and his assistant Cyd have `invented' a hybrid plant which when its leaves are made into a tea has no side effects but cures almost every disease, including cancer, on the planet. The large pharmaceutical company Rxon doesn't want the new drug out in the public domain because their business will become extinct. The pace picks up in the middle of the book with chases over snowy mountains, gun battles, car chases, corruption and espionage. There is plenty of action and a growing number of romances as the story progresses. The final third of the book is an exhilarating chase through America with the police and FBI on the heels of the new drug group. All is tied up at the end with most of the bad guys out of the way and blossoming romances blossomed.

It is a sci-fi book so I can't say that it's all believable but most is plausible. The book is written with loads of enthusiasm but is very American and may not suit all British readers. One example is a young waitress is described as pretty as a pear with an ass - most Brits don't think pear shaped is attractive and I couldn't get the image of Barbapapa with a donkey out of my mind. All in all, it is a good story with loads of action and excitement and is well worth a read.

In this novel, a genetically modified plant not only cures the common cold, it provides a cure for at least some forms of cancer. The new plant was named Cannastar by its developer Maury Bernstein, a botanist working for a pharmaceutical company called Rxon. Alas, the pharmaceutical company sees nothing but trouble - a negative impact on the bottom line - as a consequence of this miracle drug, and they set out to destroy it before it destroys them. Maury Bernstein is the first victim, but he won't be the last.

`Are people really that vicious and destructive and vile?'

Enter our heroes: Alex Farmer, a childhood friend of Maury Bernstein, and Cydney (Cyd) Seeley who work together against great odds to try to grow, purify and distribute the drug to those who need it. They find some help in (at times) some fairly surprising places, but the bad guys (including Cyd's cousin Senator Sam Seeley) are relentless.

Will the good guys prevail, and at what cost?

There's an abundance of action here, but some of the twists and turns remind me of a long running soap opera. The bad guys personify corporate greed aided by political corruption and the good guys occasionally make poor judgement calls (for good reasons, naturally). Ironically, the good guys include some ruthless drug dealers - which somehow seems appropriate in a novel which combines elements of cynicism, satire and soap opera.

In my reading, this novel is less a medical thriller than a vehicle for a cynical and satirical look at the politics of the pharmaceutical industry. I found that the impact of this was undermined by what I felt were unnecessary and sometimes clumsy twists and turns in the story - such as the Alicia diversion. There's a good story hidden in here, but I think it still needs some polishing.

Note: I was offered, and accepted, a copy of this book for review purposes.
