5.0 out of 5 stars Morphine addiction. 12 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
Cooler than the other side of the pillow. Cooler than a Polar Bear's ray bans. Cooler than a pen.... well, just cool. I adore this album. As much as I find to love in Morphine's other releases, I absolutely adore this album. Drums, 2 string slide bass, tenor sax and Mark Sandman's voice dripping smoky, bluesy cool. Tales of addiction, affairs, crazy women and so much more. Atmospheric, moody, jazzy, super cool. Check this album out and get addicted to Morphine.

When you first hear Morphine's music the combination of Mark Sandman's soulful, baritone voice and Dana Colley's drawling, baritone saxophone is immediately striking. Quickly you'll notice a third element; something is unusual about the guitar sound. Sandman built his own two stringed electric bass guitars which he played with a slide. I can't think of another band which used such a sound as an integral part of their music and it gives Morphine a uniquely laconic atmosphere as the bass notes, usually the bedrock in even the most wild music, naturally drift ever so slightly from the correct pitch. It all adds up to a cool after-hours vibe. Nice.

My favourite songs here are the propulsive "Buena", the gorgeously resigned drug confessional of the title track and the manic, "hey, I thought you said your man was out of town?" skronk of "Thursday." Also check out the album Yes, which was more experimental but contains the absolutely essential "Honey White". A great unsung band.

5.0 out of 5 stars At long last... 20 Mar 2012
By VBranco
Format:Vinyl
... I get to own this gem on vinyl. Morphine are one of my favourite bands, and i was pretty excited when I knew Cure for Pain was being released.
The music is superb (if you like it, you'll know it by now) and the sound is very good, with good definition and dynamic range.
The gatefold jacket is made of pretty thick and glossy cardboard (although the cover lacks definition, looks like a blown up image of the original cover) and the advertised insert with an interview with the surviving members of the band is only one black and white page (not fake advertising, but pretty close).

But that doesn't matter, because the music more than makes up for it. Buy it while you can and help me petition for the release of the other 3 Morphine albums (Yes has been around for a while), if you're a vinyl fan like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, smoky, bar-room music at its best 18 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Morphine a rare breed of band, only 3 piece, fusing deep and dirty saxophone grooves with a solid jazzy rhythm section and excellent lyrics. Their music reminds me of a quote on Jeff Buckley's Grace album.. "fused with an ecstatic melancholy". 'Cure For Pain' is for me their strongest album, with every song a classic. If you like your music dark, bluesy and filled with a deep groove then you'll love this.
