HASH(0x8a7da3e4) out of 5 stars This stuff works, but a warning! 3 Oct. 2014

I'm actually surprised that this product is garnering any negative reviews. I've been experimenting with nutraceuticals over the last 10 years, and with few exceptions, none of them really does much of anything. Longvida is one of the exceptions.

I notice generally an hour after taking it an improvement in mood, cognitive function, energy, and my achy joints. That alone should convince you that it's working, let alone what it's doing on a cellular level to clear up cellular debris and induce apoptosis in cancer cells.

But a warning! Apparently curcumin and green tea promote opposite effects in promoting gene expression of the keratinocyte differentiation marker. I'm not exactly positive on what this gene expression stimulates but it appears to protect the basal cell. I just learned about this today, hence I will be consuming green tea many hours after I've consumed Longvida. I'll post the link to the study in the comments field in case anyone's interested.

Edit: I forgot to mention that many other brands try to increase the bioavailability of curcumin by adding pepper (or BioPerine). If you take any other supplements or medications, then the BioPerine will affect the availability of that supplement/drug too. Just another reasons to stick to Longvida, which just consists of curcumin.

HASH(0x8a25af9c) out of 5 stars This stuff is the bomb!!! 2 Mar. 2013
By campbellia - Published on Amazon.com
I have been very involved in supplement research for the past 5 years or so. I can definitely say that this Longvida Curcumin is worth the extra money. I have been taking the Jarrow labs curcumin for 3 years, and just recently switched to the Longvida. The difference is astounding, and this is now one of my main daily supplements along with Ubiquinol and Vinpocetine. This product reduces inflammation body wide. I am 6'6" and very active. I do alot of running and have bad knees because of it. I also have some old injuries to my back from playing rugby. Taking this completely alleviates symptoms from those chronic pains. I usually order from Phytosensia, but this looks like the same product at a better price. Don't cheap out because this is much better than any other (non-longvida) curcumin on the market. Give it a shot!

HASH(0x8b1b2d8c) out of 5 stars Holy crap it worked! 1 Jun. 2014

I've been having issues with a knee problem a persistent Baker's Cyst for about 2 years now. I am deathly allergic to all NSAIDS so I had to live with the swelling and pain. Thankfully I'm a massage and shiatsu therapist who also deals in essential oils so I was able to give myself some relief but never could solve the problem entirely. One day I asked my chiro what else I could take as an anti-inflammatory and she said "Tumeric!" so I did what we all do, I searched the internet for more info. It seemed the best reviews came from this product and I needed to do something so I bought 1 bottle. After 2 weeks of taking it daily my knee pain was gone!! I was gobsmacked! 2 years of pain just gone! I decided to see if there was another, less expensive Curcumin (Tumeric) product out there that had good reviews as well and will start taking that (Curcumin C3 w/ Bioperine) to see if my knee pain remains gone or comes back. No matter what, this stuff is amazing!!!

HASH(0x8a25d144) out of 5 stars Nutrivene Curcumin vs Nine Leading Curcumin Supplements 22 Jan. 2015
By RWM - Published on Amazon.com
***
Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading curcumin supplements: Innovix Labs High Absorption Curcumin, Nutrigold Turmeric Curcumin Gold (120 Capsules), Doctor's Best Curcumin C3 Complex with BioPerine, Viva Labs Curcumin C3® (Turmeric) w/ Bioperine, Nutrivene Curcumin, Now Foods Curcubrain, Vitamin Research Products Longvida Curcumin, Relentless Improvement Curcumin, Swanson Superior Herbs Curcumin Complex (60 Count), and Pure Encapsulations Curcumin 500 with BioPerine.

INTRODUCTION:

Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, the spice often used in curries. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for various inflammatory conditions. Recently, there has been a lot of positive scientific research confirming these benefits. Not surprisingly, several new curcumin products have become available.

Curcumin is like fish oil in that it has multiple benefits. Curcumin is used for pain/inflammation, brain health or cognitive decline, cancer prevention, heart health and even alleviating depression. Many of these seemingly unrelated disease conditions trace back to inflammation and reducing inflammation is how curcumin works. So it is not surprising that curcumin appears to do so many different things. Anyone taking fish oil ought to seriously consider adding curcumin to his or her supplement regimen.

Curcumin is very poorly absorbed but is safe even at very high doses. Taking turmeric spice is not recommended, as it is barely absorbed. Several competing technologies that provide higher-absorption curcumin have become available. Most of them claim to be better than the other types of curcumin. What most people do not realize is that most of these "Our brand is better than the other brand" claims are based on studies that compared highly purified curcumin extracts to turmeric or low-potency curcumin.

You will see one brand claiming "10X better absorbed" while another says "2000% better absorbed." These claims are not false, but remember that this is like comparing a sports car to an old jalopy instead of another sports car.

But what is clear is that the addition of black pepper extract makes curcumin much better absorbed. BioPerine® is the most researched, patented and studied black pepper extract. It is worth paying a little extra for products with BioPerine®. Sabinsa Corp makes BioPerine® and they are also the most established curcumin manufacturer. Their curcumin products (C3 Complex and C3 Reduct) have the most research and science behind them. Other trusted brands of curcumin are BCM-95® and Meriva.

BCM-95® is a promising new form of curcumin extract. It's a mixture of curcumin extract and turmeric essential oil. The makers of BCM-95® claim much higher absorption (6X as much as regular curcumin) and longer duration in the blood. These figures may be puffed because the 'increased absorption' includes biologically useless compounds like curcumin glucuronides. Also, the blood duration study was conducted by the manufacturer on just 4 individuals in India. BCM-95® products usually do not contain black pepper extract, possibly to keep cost low. It would be much better absorbed if taken with black pepper extract like BioPerine® and taken with a meal. You could always combine a BCM-95® product with another that also contains BioPerine® to help increase absorption. BCM-95® has been clinically studied - eight human clinical trials so far with positive results. This is a good product but falls just short of great due to the absence of black pepper extract and somewhat inflated absorption claims.

CurcuWin technology makes curcumin more water soluble (and therefore better absorbed) by mixing Curcumin with tocopherol and a polymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). This product was shown to be better absorbed than BCM-95 and Meriva but the 46X better claim is not an apples-to-apples comparison. It was only shown to be better absorbed than other Curcumin extracts given two conditions 1) when there was no black pepper extract present and 2) and when taken on an empty stomach. Curcumin of all forms are very poorly absorbed on empty stomachs and without black pepper extract. Whether the relative absorption claim will remain in the presence of food and black pepper extract, remains to be seen. With CurcuWin technology, up to 70 to 80% of each capsule could be PVP and only 20% of the capsule is curcumin extract. We do not know if it is safe to consume several hundred mgs of PVP on a daily basis.

Meriva, Longvida, Cavamax, and Theracurmin all sacrifice quantity of active compound for increased absorption. BCM-95®, C3 Reduct and C3 Complex provide the highest levels of curcumin per pill since they are not diluted by carriers.

Theracurmin technology gets better absorption by making the curcumin particle size very small (nano technology). This makes it water-dispersible. Like the technologies above, this technology is 90% carrier and 10% active compound. 300 mgs of Theracurmin has 30 mgs of curcumin. Again, those 30 mg are going to be well absorbed.

Another point to consider before buying is that technologies like Meriva, Longvida, and Cavamax provide curcumin that is highly absorbed, but they got that way by binding the curcumin with absorbing agents. In some cases, the capsules are 80% absorbing agents. This leaves hardly any room for curcumin, which somewhat defeats the purpose of taking curcumin. So if you see "500 mgs of Curcumin Complex," you may only be getting 100 mgs of actual curcumin - albeit the 100 mg will be well absorbed.

Regardless of which type of curcumin you buy, it is interesting to note that all curcumin is digested in the body by good probiotic bacteria.

All the various forms of curcumin extracts make a regular "cost per pill" comparison somewhat useless. If it seems really cheap, you may be buying the "spice grade" powdered turmeric, which you're better off passing on.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these products.

Innovix Labs High Absorption Curcumin (See, High Absorption CURCUMIN TURMERIC Extract (by InnovixLabs). 100 Time Release Tablets. Award-Winning Curcumin C3 Reduct + Curcumin C3 Complex + BioPerine. 3X More Powerful than regular Curcumin extracts.)
*****
Highlights: Outstanding, brand new, third generation cutting edge product. Contains a "pre-converted" and time-released form of C3® Reduct Curcumin. Your body has to first digest curcumin to get benefits. C3® Reduct gives you a form that is already converted to what your body would convert it to, thereby skipping an absorption bottleneck.

Relentless Improvement Curcumin (See, Curcumin (CurcuWin). 46x Relative Absorption Over Standard Curcumin Supplements. 60 Vegecaps.)
****
Highlights: This product contains a new form of curcumin extract called CurcuWin®. It claims to be 46X better absorbed than regular curcumin. This 46X number only holds true when CurcuWin® is compared to Sabinsa C3 complex WITHOUT black pepper extract and on an empty stomach. However, no one should take Curcumin of any sort on an empty stomach or without black pepper extract. This technology makes the curcumin more water soluble by mixing curcumin with tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate and of all things, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, a polymer with questionable desirability in a health product. It is true that this product was shown to be better absorbed than BCM-95 and Meriva but the 46X better claim is cherry picked to sound impressive. It was also shown to be better absorbed than regular curcumin extract when there was no black pepper extract included. So, yes, it is a technical achievement in curcumin absorption, but the inclusion of polyvinyl pyrrolidone in the formula offsets most of my enthusiasm.

Pure Encapsulations Curcumin 500 with BioPerine (See, Pure Encapsulations - Curcumin 500 With Bioperine 120 VegiCaps)
****
Highlights: A very good (traditional) curcumin formula with C3 Complex plus BioPerine. It is virtually identical to dozens of other formulas available, but this product costs twice as much. This added premium, in my opinion, is not worth it because the active ingredients in this product are the same as those made by Nutrigold, Viva Labs, etc. There is also 10 mgs of ascorbyl palmitate, a fat-soluble Vitamin C, randomly added as an active ingredient – it does not provide enough Vitamin C to make much difference in your health. Pure Encapsulations is a “practitioner brand,” meaning it is sold on Amazon by health practitioners like chiropractors, acupuncturists, etc. This added middleman explains the high cost. If you have a strong allegiance to the Pure Encapsulations brand, buy this product. Otherwise, despite being a very good product, you have many alternatives that offer the same benefits for a much better value
