Amazon.co.uk Review

He never learns. In the fourth season of his award-winning HBO comedy series, the quasi-fictional character of Larry David continues to say--and do--whatever he wants whenever he wants. In the first episode alone ("Mel's Offer"), in which Mel Brooks offers him the role of Max Bialystock in The Producers, David offends a doctor, a lesbian couple, a wheelchair user, and Ben Stiller (by not shaking his hand after he sneezes). Then, in the second ("Ben's Birthday Party"), he offends a blind man--by telling him his girlfriend's not as hot as she claims--and pokes Stiller in the eye with a skewer while attempting to show agent Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin) his new golf move.

Larry continues to offend Stiller until he drops out of The Producers and, in the fifth episode ("The 5 Wood"), David Schwimmer steps in. The following episode ("The Car Pool Lane"), in which David attends a Dodgers game--with a prostitute, so he can use the carpool lane--made history when it set an innocent man free. Unused footage from the show, entered into evidence by the defense attorney, confirmed his client's alibi that he couldn't have committed a murder because he was at the game (alas, the Braves still trounced the Dodgers). Other guests include Ted Danson ("The Weatherman"), Russell Means ("Wandering Bear"), and Gina Gershon ("The Survivor") as a Hasidic hottie. In addition, the hour-long season finale ("Opening Night") boasts a bevy of stars, including David’s old colleague Jerry Seinfeld, Nathan Lane (Broadway's original Bialystock), and fellow Tony Award winner Anne Bancroft. As they've done since the early days, Cheryl Hines (Cheryl David), Susie Essman (Susie Greene), and Richard Lewis and Wanda Sykes (as themselves) do what they can to keep one-man demolition derby David in check. --Kathleen C. Fennessy, Amazon.com

Synopsis

Larry David's post-SEINFELD career continues apace with the fourth season of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. The concept for the show which sees David playing himself as he attempts to undertake various creative projects, while frequently landing in hugely entertaining trouble wherever he turns was highly original when CURB first aired. But by the time the Fourth Season aired, imitators were waiting in the wings, as celebrities such as Kirsty Alley (FAT ACTRESS) and Lisa Kudrow (THE COMEBACK) honed their own, similar shows. Undeterred, David manages to breath new life into the formula, even producing one of the best episodes yet in 'The Car Pool Lane'. Incredibly, this episode, which saw the beleaguered star attending a Dodgers game with a prostitute so he could travel in the car-pool lane, ended up overlapping with a real-life court case. The CURB team caught a murder suspect, Juan Catalan, on camera during the game, with their footage eventually proving his innocence in the case. One of the main themes of the show involves David's attempts to avoid tension at all costs while unwittingly landing himself in it, making the incident enjoyably ironic. Further adventures see our hapless hero attempting to buy medicinal marijuana and attending Ben Stiller's birthday, while his long-suffering wife Cheryl Hines and manager Jeff Garlin reach new levels of exasperation at David's behaviour. This Season is tied together by a long-running plot which sees David preparing for a role in a Broadway production of THE PRODUCERS, with the final episode shot on opening-night in New York City. Providing a deliciously funny climax to David's fourth series of adventures, fans of the show will no doubt be delighted to know that nothing goes according to plan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Larry David continues the mayhem..., 2 Oct 2005
By D. Brewer "dark_mercenary" (Dorset, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In just three years, Seinfeld co-creator Larry David has gone a long way to approaching and perhaps even surpassing his previous creation with this supremely well-crafted sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The formula is very simple; Larry David, as himself, manages to offend almost everyone he meets which leads to hilarious consequences throughout each show. What truly makes Larry a genuine telvision gem is that, like most protagonists, he is his own worst enemy and is derided simply for his honesty and un-flinching belief in his right to speak his mind.

But however he manages to get there he always seems to do or say the wrong thing. The first three series were great - this one, if it's possible, is even better. In this series there is one common theme of Larry's initiation into Broadway as the star of Mel Brooks' legendary play, The Producers.

Throughout the series we follow Larry as he prepares for his biggest role to date and another common theme as he prepares to cash in on an extraordinary 10th anniversary birthday present (which I won't spoil for you by saying)!

As usual for Curb, there is a whole host of guest stars with David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft being chief amongst them, in addition to the usual wonderful supporting cast of Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Richard Lewis, Wanda Sykes and the brilliant Susie Essman as the caustic, acid-tongued Susie Green.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a rare gem of a sitcom which has more in common with The Office and Fawlty Towers than other traditional sitcom fare such as Friends. Larry David, if there's any justice, will go down in sitcom infamy as a character as diverse as either David Brent (The Office) or Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers).

But considering that Larry David is a real, living, breathing human being, that makes the excellent Larry David all the more remarkable...

(P.S. For those who are wondering about extras on the DVD's, I have to be honest and say that I don't think there are many to be found but as I never watch extras anyway, I'm not really fit to comment on them.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthusiasm not yet curbed for this excellent series, 7 May 2009
By Barney McGrew "Charlie" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
After three hugely successful seasons, Larry David's straight-faced comedy soap opera shows no sign of running out of steam. Despite other US celebrities such as Lisa Kudrow and Kirsty Alley formulating their own similar shows, Curb your Enthusiasm remains the most cringeworthily hilarious kid on the block.
The first episode sees our (anti) hero in yet another new house, however some things haven't changed, as Larry's determination to pursue his own interests above those of everyone around him continue unabated. As the eve of his 10th wedding anniversary approaches, Larry reminds his wife Cheryl of the promise she made to him a decade ago that he could sleep with one other woman as a tenth anniversary gift. This leads to Larry being accused of having a breast obsession, whilst a chance encounter with his comedy hero Mel Brooks in a karaoke bar, leads to him being offered the lead role in Brooks' Broadway smash 'The Producers'. With this season's story arc firmly in place, Larry proceeds to upset the apple cart once more; accidentally stabbing co-star Ben Stiller in the eye with a kebab skewer, falling out with another doctor, and insulting an IT expert in a wheelchair.
With his now familiar blend of ineptness and stubborn self-belief, Larry David has produced yet another great season of his hit show. With two more series' available on DVD and another being made, there is obviously still some way to go before Larry calls it a day.

4.0 out of 5 stars PRETTY PRETTY GOOD, 4 Jun 2009
By Brian O'connell - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So Mel Brooks wants Larry David to preform on the Broadway show The Producers, that can only mean one thing. Trouble for everybody connected. Season 4 of Curb has two themes running through it, one being him appearing in The Producers and the other being his tenth wedding anniversary present from his long suffering wife Cheryl which is that he can sleep with a woman of his choice and he has until the date of the tenth anniversary to do this.

It just happens that his wedding anniversary and opening night of The Producers are on the same day so over ten episodes Larry will do his best to cause as much mayhem and insult and offend as many people as possible.

Ben Stiller, Mel Brooks and David Schwimmer are the guest stars for this series and the usual cast all remain Jeff Garlin as Larry's manager Jeff, Cheryl Hines as his wife Cheryl and Richard Lewis who plays himself.

So get ready for Larry as he buys weed, takes a hooker to a baseball game, takes a 5 wood from a dead mans casket and other things you have to see to believe.
