Product Description

Review

"'Tom Norrington-Davies writes about food you actually want to eat - and cook. Nothing is prinked or preened: his is a friendly, cosy presence in the kitchen.' - Nigella Lawson 'A lifestyle guide: up to the minute, realistic, young at heart and a brilliant introduction to home cooking.' - Guardian 'Perfect for anyone who doesn't like ready meals, but lacks the time and energy to cook like Jamie Oliver... The recipes themselves are simple and quick but, most importantly, they're appealing, meaning that cooking is a pleasure, not a chore' - Heat (**** review)"

Cupboard love is a different kind of cook book. It is not just recipes (although there are plenty of those); it also provides a very practical blueprint for an entirely new way of shopping, cooking, eating and entertaining. Specifically, using a range of good quality larder staples as the starting point for fantastic food.

The book is split into sections such as Pasta, Risotto, Stir fries and Curries. It shows you how a basic core of ingredients can be embelished to give a wide range of different end results. The two things which impressed me most about this book were the simplicity of the recipes (no more going out to buy half the stock of the local deli for a single recipe, never to be used again); and the fact that the end results really do taste delicious (the summer pudding is a particular high point!).

I am a reformed shopper and eater, and I can highly recommend a bit of cupboard love for anyone getting bored of eating the same old bland and boring meals.

Lovely stuff 21 Sep 2006
By Leon
Format:Hardcover
I feel I've got a duty to give this author a pat on the back for this book. It's well worth the money, very user friendly and every recipe I've tried has been very tasty. Once you've got the basic "Kit" together (eg Indian)you then have a ready store for cooking and only have to buy the fresh produce needed for the particular meal, which may only be as little as one or two items. I often get home and now have the option of cooking four or five totally different meals because I've built up my store cupboard in the way the author suggests. This would be my 'dessert' island cookery book and it's the one I use most nowadays.

A very useful book 12 Feb 2006
Format:Hardcover
If you, like me, tend to fill your cupboards will all sorts of food-stuff, but still have the odd day when you don't know what to cook, this is the book for you!
A very useful book - the author really proves that you can make a great meal out of "nothing".
He gives advice on what items you must have in your cupboard, and though he is fairly true to the original recipes, he dare say "if you don't like anchovies, leave them out!"
The chapters includes pasta, rice, salads, stir-fries, eggs & toast and more, not necessarily fast food, but all recipes seem non-complicated.

Nigella Lawson has said: "Tom N-D writes about food you actually want to eat - and cook. Nothing is prinked or preened: he is a friendly, cosy presence in the kitchen."

Dated and overrated
I bought this book quite cheaply secondhand, and upon reading it wish I hadn't. I don't like the writing style of the author, I find him pretentious, preachy and prescriptive. Read more
