I have no idea what book the previous reviewer was talking about! My 8 year old just read this book (borrowed from school) and we've all enjoyed it thoroughly. Nowhere does Mr Waddell suggest that living on junk food and watching telly was adequate preparation for becoming a TV sports person. Herbie (the hero) happened to be eating (with relish) a cheeseburger, and watching TV (we have TV dinners in our house - don't you?) when he found out about a potential opportunity.

This book is an exciting, engaging novel for young readers. It has large print words and lots of cartoon-style illustrations. The story is fast paced and sweeps up the reader. My reluctant 8 year old reader read from page 14 to the end (page 60) with no extra encouragement or pushing from me. Simply because he enjoyed it! That is HUGE for any book aimed at young boys.

I came on to Amazon to put this title on my wishlist so I will remember to buy it for my soon-to-be 9year old nephew as a birthday gift. And was totally surprised and bemused to read the first review. If you've got an 8 - 9 year old to buy a gift for, who likes football, they'll LOVE this book. In fact, my literally-just-turned 7 year old son who has zero interest in football stopped his video game to listen!

It's an excellent yarn.

Misuse of imagination 10 April 2007
Format:Paperback
Dear Martin Waddel, thanks for nothing! My football-obsessed seven year old stepson, who has a distinct tendency to fantasise about being a football star, brought this book home from school and it has done much damage. In the current climate of UK primary school education, where children are praised for anything and everything, regardless of whether the behaviour is actually praiseworthy, my wife and I find it highly irresponsible that you can produce a childrens book which suggests that munching cheeseburgers while watching football on TV can lead to realization of the most risible fantasies a child is capable of. We had to tell our boy that this was merely a dream-sequence book, and that the last page or two where this becomes obvious, was missing. In the words of todays youth, could you please in future try to "keep it real".
