A most excellent compilation from World Circuit, offering two CDs worth of lively "Cumbia" tunes from Colombia. The songs on this collection were collected from the many great recordings made for the Discos Fuentes label between 1954 and 1988. Because of the wide range in years you can expect some variation in style, but the tunes and intoxicating rhythms are all thrilling. For a succinct description, here is a blurb from the liner notes:
"From powerful salsa influenced groups through swinging urban big band, to sixties surf guitar combos and rural percussion-fueled accordian madness ... classic performances all propelled and pulsing with that genre defining rock-steady bass."
And that pretty much sums it up. If you enjoy Latin music, especially the 50s and 60s sounds of Cuba, I think you'll fall in love with this stuff too. The CD set comes with a very thick booklet, filled with information about each artist and song, along with vintage photos and an essay explaining the history of cumbia (which is both a dance and a song style) and the Disco Fuentes label. Another fantastic compilation by Nick Gold and the World Circuit team. Dance if you want to!
