This book is a wonderful text explaining in some depth the differences in cultures which midwives and other health professionals may come across, thereby giving them some insight into the importance of culture in others' lives. The chapters at the back of the book concentrate on differing religions, and makes very fascinating reading if you are interested in other cultures. Communication is a major part of the book which is important for all caring professions, as a lack of communication with clients and their families may lead to what could be considered substandard/inferior care. A good text for student midwives on the path to their chosen career, but also an invaluable text to be placed on midwives' bookshelves to dip into as and when needed.

I have used this book many, many times over the past few years, and have found it extremely helpful, particularly for my community placements. Even if you work in an area with very few clients from ethnic minority backgrounds, this book could help you make all the difference to those women you do encounter.
