Product Description

Review

The far-reaching version of Cultural Studies set out by Chris Barker goes beyond rounding up the usual suspects. They're here, certainly, but Barker's targets range from semiotics to memetics; from psychoanalysis to evolutionary psychology; and from poststructuralism to pragmatism. Emphasising the language-games of theory, Barker's breezy style helps convey a wealth of knowledge. This edition will undoubtedly spark new dialogues and debates in the multidisciplinary discipline of Cultural Studies!
Matt Hills
Reader in Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University

Chris Barker's book was the first and remains the premier introductory textbook on Cultural Studies. In this third edition, Barker has updated his extensive material on the history, schools of thought and key concepts of Cultural Studies and provides an invaluable guide to emerging topics and issues in the field. Cultural Studies : Theory and Practice is written in a very accessible and student-friendly style yet it is never simplistic
Jim McGuigan
Professor of Cultural Studies, Loughborough University

This is a richly perceptive assessment of the currents - and swirling undercurrents - of Cultural Studies, written with passion and insight. Barker succeeds in showing us why theory matters, and does so in a manner that opens up familiar debates in new, exciting directions
Stuart Allan
Professor of Journalism, Bournemouth University

It is comprehensive in scope, clearly written, competent and accurate, and yet provides an original and useful perspective on cultural studies as well as an overview of key concepts, methods, topics, and the material of cultural studies
Doug Kellner
Professor of Education, Graduate School of Education, UCLA

Review

Chris Barker is a trustworthy field guide for those new to cultural studies. His book is a treasure trove of techniques and productive questions; it is an encyclopaedia of the terms, concepts and authors at the centre of cultural studies. It is a work of reference and a practical tool-kit - jump in and set it to work Ben Highmore Reader in Media Studies, University of Sussex
This new edition of Cultural Studies offers a timely engagement with important ideas, questions and debates in this fast-developing field. Remarkable in the breadth of its coverage, it is written with passion and insight. It will be warmly welcomed by students interested in how theory can help us to think through the complexities of real-world issues Stuart Allan Professor of Journalism, Bournemouth University
Chris Barker's Cultural Studies: Theory and Practice has been for many years one of the best guides to and overviews of a broad range of the issues and theories that constitute cultural studies. In addition, Barker provides his own conception, with a wink toward Wittgenstein, of cultural studies as a 'language game.' For those who want to be prepped to play the game of cultural studies, this is the book to read Douglas Kellner UCLA, author of Guys and Guns Amok and Media Spectacle and the Crisis of Democracy

Excellent 5 Jan 2010
By Jonty
Format:Paperback
I have just started a post-grad course in Cultural Studies and until reading this, was all at sea. This is a brilliant introductory text, in that it provides both an easily understandable, precise, but neverthess sophisticated point of entry into the subject.

Would heartily recommend it!

Cultural Studies is a subject unfairly maligined by many people. People's opposition to it usually clusters around its supposed ephemeral nature and the misconception that it is all writing essays on pop stars and its supposedly 'light weight' status as an academic discipline. This volume, in fact, shows what an engaging, broad and - yes - challenging discipline it can be when it is at its best. The various subsections herein coalesce into a full course which has nothing less than your entire perception of the world as its target-to-revolutionise.

Impressive guide... 7 Nov 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an impressing critical overview of the broad specter of theories and methods under the umbrella of cultural studies. The book gives you some sense of direcion as you enter into the sea of confusion made up by the various schools of thought that have influenced todays cultural studies, be it withing media, popular music, folklore or popular studies in general. The book includes a glossary of key concepts, and can be read like a companion to cultural studies. I found a lot of valuable information as the author traced the historic roots of various subjects, enabeling me to change perspective with him as he went along. I am myself a music student, studying within the field of popular music...

Best general book on cultural studies 22 May 2002
By Benjamin Juarez Echenique - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The mere fact that the author is a lecturer at an Australian University gives a fair, deep and non Eurocentrist perspective of key concepts, ideology, identity, and the challanges of postmodern and postcolonial cultural studies to achive a significant cultural policy. Excellent as textbook too.

An Excellent Work!!! 20 Dec 2008
By Celucien L. Joseph - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book shows the author's breadth in grasping and interacting with various theoretical schools of thought and their founders. Each theory is assessed succintly and critically. The book provides a window to look into the world of those who have changed the way we live, our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. A summary is provided at the end of each chapter. Overall, "Cultural Studies: Theory and Practice" is a good place to start to learning the subject matter.
