Product Description

Product Description
A sixteen-year-old boy returns to India from school in England. He develops a fascination with the land he barely remembers, becomes friendly with several Bengali young men, and finds himself in conflict with his father, a pillar of the British Raj. Moving between India and London, he increasingly finds himself between two cultures, forming friendships with Gandhi and Vivekananda and emerging as a powerful writer on Indian politics and culture. The three loves of his life, an Anglo-Indian, an Indian widow and a radical English poet and suffragette, feed his emotional life. But always he is conscious of being a fugitive, as he draws the reader with him into enchanting new worlds.

About the Author
Peter Bishop lived in India for seven years and has a PhD in the thought of Vivekananda and Aurobindo. Following that he taught Indian religions and history in a British university. His books include: Words in World Religions, A Technique for Loving. Non-violence in Indian and Christian Traditions, Written on the Flyleaf, and as General Editor (with Michael Darton) The Encyclopedia of World Faiths. He has also written widely about Gandhi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought on Cultural Fugitive, 3 Dec 2008
By Mrs. J. George "S George" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The story of Harry and his increasing engagement with India gripped me from the start and I found myself eagerly turning the pages, reluctant to stop reading.
Peter Bishop's style is clear and easy to read, but the themes of the novel are complex and informative. Reading it increased my knowledge of India's political, cultural and religious history in a way which enhanced rather than intruded on a good story.
The main characters are credible. I not only felt that I knew them but that I cared for them. The three women whom Harry loves also embody his love affair with different aspects of India, so that the novel can be read on different levels.
I found the structure interesting. Harry's diary entries from different periods of his life gave the reader an insight into his developing views. The story stood alone without them, but they add to the development of Harry's character if the reader is prepared to make the links.
Throughout the novel there is a strong sense of the dramatic, building to the last paragraph, which shocked me. I was left with an unforgettable ending and much food for thought
I thoroughly enjoyed Cultural Fugitive and thought that it would make an excellent film and would be an ideal choice for book clubs.
