An entertaining trawl through over 300 cult TV programmes from the 1950s to the 1990s, divided into six main areas. Entries detail how each series was created, its stars, catch phrases, and outstanding episodes. Informative and little-known facts are also included, along with a handy guide to programmes available on video, and over seventy photo stills. In the Science Fiction section there is everything from 'A For Andromeda' to 'Wonder Woman'. In Crime and Mystery, series from 'The Avengers (who can forget Patrick Macnee as the bowler-hatted John Steed) to 'Z Cars'. Westerns from 'The Adventures of Champion' (with the catchy signature tune sung by Frankie Laine) to 'Zorro'. In the Children's section 'The Adventures of Superman' to 'Yogi Bear'. Melodrama & Adventure, which highlights everything from 'The A-Team' (despite all the gunfire and explosions in every episode, no one, not even the bad guys, ever got hurt!) to 'The Water Margin'. Finally, the Comedy section contains gems from 'Absolutely Fabulous' to 'The Young Ones' (one of the first 'alternative' comedies on television). While it must be said that the book contains a number of technical, factual, and/or printing errors, all in all, it remains a great book to dip into and reminisce on the good (and not so good) programmes that have attained a cult following.

There are so many online sources available now that provide more detail on each programme included in this book - entire episode guides can be found for most. However, I've had my copy of this book for almost 20 years and have used it many times and just this week found myself using it again: for quick access to like for like information about the programmes featured here - it's invaluable to have the basic facts all within the covers of one book.

That aside, credit is due for the concise writing and clear imparting of information... a much appreciated book.

A bit outdated 7 Jan. 1999

Not bad but unfortunately, the book isn't up-to-date with some series. For example, the book indicates that LA Law is still screening at the time of publication(although it ceased to screen in 1994 and it didn't mention the second series of Murder One.
Still, not a bad read for any TV addict like myself.
