So Just who is the Fixie rider? It's the buzz question that a lot of people want to know right now. If we're to believe some, then the Fixie rider is a horribly spoilt late twenty something male of affluent background. He's never been required to grow up and spends all of his pocket money on cool toys and fads in a never ending effort to be trendy. Cynics would say that the Fixie rider is a myth in the process of being invented by those people who want to sell stuff to rich kids; ie the brands. The bottom line is that only two types of people really need to have a `fixed' idea of who the fixed wheel rider really is. They are: Marketers and Haters. So just who is the fixie rider? Sometimes it's better not to know...

The fixed-wheel, fixed-gear or simply `Fixie' bicycle has, for better or worse, become the focus of a sub culture all of its very own. There are those who come to Fixies from the manly and serious world of road racing citing the bicycles' considerable capacity to strengthen the legs and improve `souplesse'. There are those who come simply because it's fantastic fun to learn the new awareness and co-ordination required to make Fixies fly. Then are those who come because it's really, really cool and the bikes are well, sweet. And finally there are those who come by mistake and leave shortly afterwards. All of these pilgrims are rewarded. But above all the Fixie offers an amazing new perspective on riding a bicycle. A perspective that many claim to be a gateway to a mysterious `zone' wherein the body and cycle become one with the road, time compacts and the mind is for a few priceless moments chained to the moment in all its ragged glory. In short, it is a moving meditation.
From the Author
Through contemporary observation and the collaboration of those on the inside from Taiwan to New York, Brick Lane to Tokyo, 42x12 gives a unique insight into whats going on at ground level.
Just finished this book, and I must say a great read about fixed gear culture. I've been riding fixed for a few years now and have been fascinated by all the fixed gear websites and blogs. I stumbled across this book in my nearby book shop, bought it (obviously), and now have a new found way of thinking about the simplicity of the fixie.
Covers all the little sub cultures in fixed, the tweed thing (check out chap magazine, amazing), the tricksters and hipsters, bike polo and my favourite the messenger culture that started it all.
Really good pictures in the book, some of the best I've come across in a fixed gear book. The photography has its own style but one that fits with the subject matter so so well. This is coupled with not much in the way of text, but what is written is consistently good and to the point. Defiantly aimed at more of a coffee table read, read a bit look at the pretty pictures and put it down.
The book can seem a little preachy at times, trying to force the writer's opinion upon us, but it doesn't take away for the quality of the read.
A must have for any cyclist that loves this sport.
i have recently bought a fixed wheel bike, and found this book very interesting. Having ridden a fixed wheel when i was at school i knew what i was letting myself in for!I am loving fixed wheel!!!

This book is a delight; just a fun romp through fixie culture. The author never takes anything too seriously, yet gets to the heart of the matter: riding fixed or single-speed is fun! Loaded with great photos, stories and quotes, it is the most fun you can have while not actually on your bike.
Here is an example of the writing, which captures the essence of the fixed gear movement:
"The drive of technology has always been towards reducing the amount of effort we have to use to achieve any goal. We are perhaps now, just beginning to realize that certain skills and talents that we have as human beings are atrophying as a result."
"It is a gateway to a mysterious zone wherein the body and cycle become one with the road, time compacts and the mind is for a few priceless moments chained to the moment in all its ragged glory. In short, it is moving meditation."
The actual text is brief and I wish there were a few more photos of just the bikes. "Fixed: Global Fixed-Gear Culture" does a better job of covering the history and showing the bikes. But "42-12" is the best at capturing the zeitgeist of the single speed movement.
