Product Description

Product Description

'I consulted with my two brothers, DR. REASON and DR. EXPERIENCE, and took a voyage to visit my mother NATURE, by whose advice, together with the help of DR. DILIGENCE, I at last obtained my desire; and, being warned by MR. HONESTY, a stranger in our days, to publish it to the world, I have done it.' Nicholas Culpeper First published over 350 years ago during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Complete Herbal by physician, herbalist and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper remains one of the most comprehensive listings of herbs and their uses in existence. In this illustrated edition, over 400 herbs are described in detail, along with their 'government and virtues', remedies and cautions. Although much of the medical advice must be taken with a pinch of salt, the engaging tone, enthusiasm and expertise of the author are irresistible and highly entertaining. Packed with entertaining prose and traditional remedies, Culpeper's Complete Herbal is a masterpiece of alternative medicine. With advice on treating ailments from headaches, coughs and swellings, to bad sight, kidney stones and gout, the author covers maladies great and small. Much of Culpeper's physic is based around the ancient theory of the four humours - black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood - a system long disproved but which holds at its heart the idea of balance, as important to our health today as it ever was.

About the Author

Born in 1616, thirteen days after his father's death, Nicholas Culpeper led a colourful life. Abandoning his studies at Cambridge after an unhappy affair, he became apprenticed to an apothecary in London and trained as a herbalist. Intent on spreading the benefits of herbal medicine to the wider public, he routinely treated the poor for no fee at his practice in Spitalfields. In 1649 he published a translation of the Pharmacopeia Londensis, previously only in Latin, followed two years later by A Directory for Midwives. His magnum opus, The English Physitian, or The Complete Herbal, was published in 1653, just a year before his death.

I was after a classic reprint for research purposes. This edition is a "Gifte Booke" printed in light green ink and barely legible. It is illustrated with microscopic reproductions of the original woodcuts in the margin; you can't see them and they aren't even apparently the right illustration for the item. I can use it, but I regret paying more for what I thought would be a more legible edition.

Culpepper's herbal is essential reading for anyone interested in herbal medicine and the history of medicine or who is seduced by the whole charming world of herb gardening. Find a good annotated edition with legible text.

This book is really useful for anyone interested in plant history. It is full of fascinating facts. Many of the herbs are still used today for some of the same reasons when Culpeper wrote his herbal.
