When my last manual can opener died (after only a couple of tins!), I started to seriously consider what my next move should be.
I cook a lot and one of my most frequently used ingredients are canned tomatoes, so I cannot really do without a can opener.
Is it just me or do anyone else out there share my complete failure in finding a reliable can opener? I'm on my 5th this year, and I am beginning to conspire that they are deliberately made incredibly poorly just so that we keep buying new ones...
My options were either to get another manual one, but without any moving parts (like the really retro ones), or go buy an automatic one.
After making the obligatory week long research and reading around 7000+ reviews (joys of internet), but especially upon watching a video of a similar item at work, I was sold on the automatic idea.
I went for this newer, smaller model.
I received the item very soon after ordering, and couldn't wait to get home to give it a good try.
This thing works like a dream, like a charm!
I'm in love!
You just put it on top of the can, and like a little robotic hamster it walks around it to reveal a perfectly cut lid, which helpfully sticks to a tiny magnet under its belly, which you then just gently pick and bin.
No more starting with a dodgy can opener and finishing by stabbing the tin with your best knife, ending up drenched in whatever is in the tin, and with a now damaged knife. No more puddles of mess on the workbench, or the splash-back. No more sharp, jaggedy edges. No more hurt wrists and fingers.
I'm of course yet to see if it is going to last, but promise - I'll be back to update in a couple of months.
So far, so great!
UPDATE: Lowering to 2 stars as can opener now dead before its batteries...
