Britain's Ordnance Survey publishes maps in a variety of scales for automobile touring, walking, trekking, and other outdoor pursuits. The Outdoor Leisure series at 1:25,000 scale has been subsumed into a later product, but these particular leisure maps are still worth picking up if you can find them.
"Outdoor Leisure 8: The Cuillin & Torridon Hills" covers two outstanding walking/trekking areas in the West Highlands of Scotland. On one side of the map are the Cuillin Hills in the southern portion of the Isle of Skye. The area covered by the map is bounded in the south by the Sound of Sleat south of Skye, in the east by Broadford and the A850 road, in the north by the A850 as it curves across Skye, and in the west by Drynoch and the Glen Brittle forest. In the center are the Cuillin Hills, steep, stony, and subject to all the best and worst of the wet cool weather of the West Higlands.
The other side of the map takes in the Torridon Hills on the mainland, north and east of Skye. The rugged Torridon Hills cover the center of the map, bounded by upper Loch Torridon in the South, and in the northeast by Loch Maree. Highlights of this area include Beinn Eighe in the center of a national nature preserve, and the sea lochs that surround the area. Access by road is limited in this area.
"Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure #8: The Cuillin & Torridon Hills" is highly recommended as an invaluable planning and navigation aid for those fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore a rugged and beautiful corner of the Scottish Highlands.
