In censored times the Spanish directors found new ways to bring important issues to the fore- in this case the deceit and everyday neglect and cruelty of the system is brought under scrutiny in the figure of the soldier father, whose wife haunts the youngest daughter. The child represents the nascent rebellion- which we see when she adamantly refuses to kiss her father's cadaver- unlike her older sibling. It is at once a charming and thoughtful film which is quite spellbinding. The film's direction and photography are enchanting, especially the quiet tone of the strong message, which has a twist in the tail. I love it and recommend it as a great classic.
